I have one cat and one dog. I have always been a cat person and have had several in my life time. We had three when we built our home, but am now down to one. When I was a child we always had a cocker spaniel and a cat and they stayed outside. When I got married we got a cat and it stayed out and in both. After many cats going out and many getting hurt or sick we decided to keep this last one in since the vet bills were just ridiculous. I believe they charge as much or more than our doctors do. When my daughter was a teen she started asking for a dog and I said no because we do not have a fence and we live on a busy road. She said it can stay in and I said I don't think so. I told her when she gets out on her on she can have all the dogs she wants in her house. Well, she bought a yorkie after she got married and I kept her for a week when they went on vacation and fell in love. That was all it took for me to want one. I started my search of a yorkie and found one in driving distance, a long driving distance. I got my daughter to go with me and look and we put the info in the gps and we drove for about two hours and finally found the house. It was a scary looking old house way off the road. Kind of haunted looking. I said this can't be it, but he number on the mailbox was right. We drove down the driveway and were actually scared to get out. We walked to the door and it was not even closed all the way and we knocked on it a few times and finally someone came. The lady was real nice, but I was shocked at the condition of this place and her husband is a preacher at some church so I thought o.k. maybe this is safe. She took us out back to see the puppies. She had a small trailer with the kennels in it. She had westies, yorkies, and miniture schnauzers. She had two giant schnauzer, too that looked like ponies they were so big. She had two yorkies and I played with them and picked mine out and paid for her and went on my way. I really believe that place was like a puppy mill and I rescued her from it. I was told she would be around seven pounds when she was fully grown...NOT! She is almost fifteen pounds and we believe she is a silky terrier, not a yorkie. The lady had a male silky she tried to get me to take. He was two and she threw him in my arms, but I came for a yorkie puppy. I believe now that the silky she handed me is probably the father of my dog. We wouldn't take anything for her. She is the light of my life and we love her to death even after several vet trips. She has stomach issues on and off. For one thing she has eaten and gotten into things she shouldn't. Thank goodness for pet insurance that we bought for her.

Great photo of your dog ... so cute!
We have 3 cats. 2 has always been our maximum number, but there must be a sign on our house that says "strays welcome". We picked up our oldest cat at church carnival back in California when our girls were little. She is 13 now so she mostly stays on my bed or on the back of the chair in my room. She is no trouble at all. Our second oldest cat came from a neighbor who was asked to hold a box at the Waxhaw 4th of July Parade a few years ago. It had a flea, worm & mite infested tiny white & black kitten in it. He gave the box to our girls & they tried to find someone to take it by showing it to everyone at the neighborhood pool party. I didn't want to take him because I hadn't gotten over losing my last cat a few months back, but I relented. We definitely did not want a 3rd cat, but one night at a bible study at our house one of the ladies announced that she had let my cat in. I hadn't ever seen that cat before in my life. Had to keep him since he was sick & no one was going to take a sick cat. We have to keep him in our basement to be away from our other cats. Every time. He is ALWAYS purring when someone is in the room with him. He is so sweet. He has never hissed at my other cats or at me. He is very compliant & will even open his mouth when I give him his medicine & goes into his crate when I need him to.
We have helped several other strays along the way, even a dog, but was able to find their owners. I guess I have a soft spot for helpless & lost animals.

We rescued our dog Murphy from the Humane Society about 8 years ago. She was an older dog mixed, part german shepard, part black lab. When my daughter and I went to look at dogs we wanted a little one. We went from cage to cage and all the little dogs were jumpping and barking at us...then we saw Murphy sitting in the corner of her cage looking sad. My daughter asked if we could walk her and we did. She was the one! We took her home that day. My husband was a little shocked by her 50 lb size but she fit right into our family. She didn't have a name when we got her. We named her Murphy because I loved the Murphy Brown TV show from years ago. She is so timid and sweet and never barks. She even lets the grandkids crawl all over her. Her age is catching up to her though. We really never knew her exact age, the vet estimates about 13 years now. We just started her on arthrtis medication because she's moving pretty slow these days. We love our Murphy girl. We hope she's with us for a long while.

We have an 11 year old mixed breed named Murphy too! Our Murphy name came from our love of Ireland. We debated for a dog for about a year. I wanted small. He wanted big, but we always knew it's name would be Murphy.

My dad is retired and works at a horse sell so one night we went by on our way home. A girl was carrying a tiny tiny puppy in her arms and I asked to hold it. Next thing you know, she ran off. I was i love immediately. The puppies had been brought to the barn to be given away. This runt was the last to go. The little girl had taken it, but her parents said no and the farmer had gone. I knew she was mine. I kept trying to get Tom to hold her and he was mumbling that she had been dumped on us, blah, blah, blah. I finally handed her off quickly and stood to the side. He would hold her up and stare in her face (granted she weighted 2 1/2 lbs.!), then put her in his arm, stare, pet, stare, pet. Then I watched as he put her in his arm, he kissed her on the head. I looked at my dad and said, "Wrap her up... she is mine!"

We brought her home around 2:30 am and I went to Walmart to get some puppy supplies. I get home and Tom goes watch this. Fleas were jumping off of her. It was awful. I took her to the vet the next morning. She had ring worm, worms, and fleas. They said she wouldn't be over 13 lbs. Well, at 11 1/2 years later and 29 lbs she is our first baby.

She is a very well traveled dog. She lived with us in Germany and has been to Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria and more! I never thought the day would come that I would be trying on clothes in a dressing room with her right there with me!

I see her moving slower now and her eyes are starting to get cloudy and it just breaks my heart. I love her so much and it will be a sad day when she isn't part of us any more. She is and will always be my first baby!

O.k. jemsmom you made me cry. It will be an awful day the day I lose my dog (Bailey), too. She is only two though so I should have several years before that tragic day.

We have 2 dogs Kaylee and Holly. red Heelers. They are very energetic and a sturdy dog. Also called Australian Cattle Dog. Both sisters and 4 yrs.old now. Very much strong personalities. Quick learners and very loyal. Kaylee has a bad hip doesnt care for mornings (needs her wake up time) and is content by the door waiting for her walk. I too have a bad hip and not a morning fan We are alike. Holly loves mornings and is all hiped and ready to roar. Shes antsy! just like Jed. How strange is that. I picked Kaylee jed picked Holly as pups. Strange! We meant for 1 dog. Anyone with heelers can understand why. However Kaylee was the runt and had snotty eyes and wasnt running like the others, shivered and just paain didnt look good. just looked at me the entire time. I could not leave her behind No Way. So we bought both. Vets the next day and we are all fine. Our vet said "Where did ya get the dingos?" he explained what we were in for with 2. Was he right!!! We had a blue heeler first. My husband had her before I came along She was 18 when he passed. They lived in a semi together while he did over the road trucking. Also a cat Jack who is dark grey and white. Hes 24 lbs. A Big Boy. Kinda shy but loves to talk! Then we had Muffin who some of ya know passed just before Christmas. She was a lover! Long haired beauty. She was around 15. We inherited her when her owner died 12 yrs. ago. She came to us very nervous very shy and terrible teeth and matted hair. We had her teeth all taken care of and clipped her and she came out of her shell and was my buddy till the end. I like to think we gave her a happy healthy life. Pets are like kids they need love and care. I still call her name when I get in once in a while when I call for Jack. The dogs know whn I am home as they are waggin those tails at the door. Its walk time!

Gardengirl, Thats a ruff one to go through.I would be devistated .
I love hearing these stories of people simply caring enough to take proper care of their pals. Its great as so many do not and i get angered by it big time. If I won the lottery I'd have a home for all. I just cant take an abused or mistreated animal. I see the adds on TV for those Save the animals and man I tear up looking at those helpless faces. If I watch animal planet its quite possible Ill be in tears

I am a huge animal lover too, and whenever I hear anything remotely sad about animals, I start to cry! so sorry for those of you who have lost your loved ones. I lost my beloved Maggie, a blond cocker spaniel 6 1/2 years ago. It is still hard for me to talk about it, or think about her. My husband surprised me 3 weeks after losing Maggie by bringing home an 8 week old blond cocker spaniel that we named Emily. what a life saver she was! I didn't even want to leave the house after losing my beloved Maggie, and suddenly I had a little puppy to take care of and house break! I never had any kids, not that I didn't want any, but I didn't get married til I was 37, & my hubby is older than me & already had grand kids. So, Emily is our baby and is totally spoiled and doted on! If only more people would treat their pets this way! For those of you Rate my spacers, I am "crazyaboutparis", and Emily appears in just about every posting of mine! I love hearing about other people's pets & seeing their pictures, too! :)

Our dogs name is Lucy and as you can see she is a three year old black Pug!!~ This is our story. We had talked about getting a family dog, however Mike and I knew we would be the sole care takers, so we always put it off. Well one day we where taking a ride in the country and I saw this kennel place that had all kinds of new puppies, different breeds. I said to Mike let's just stop and look at the puppies, and of course the boys yelled yes. So we go in and there are rows and rows of little puppies in the pools, jumping and licking, etc. Well there where two little black pugs and I said lets take them out and play with them....well they where tooooooo cute for words. WE LEFT the pet store empty handed YES.....so we went home and I had a dream about Lucy, I woke up and said to my husband I have to go get that little black pug her name is Lucy and her brother is Desi, let's get them both..he said no way, we can get one....off we went and she has been the apple of my husbands eye ever since....I say thank God we did not have a daughter!!

Oh pets, yes I have 2 huge dogs and 4 cats! The dogs are a Mastiff- (Brandy), and a Great Pyrenees-(Nija). Cats- Runty, Trippy, Tikey and Homey. Don't ask me about the names except for Runty. I lived in Columbus, NE for about one year several years ago. One day I was about to get in my jeep and go drive around. I heard a little squeaking noise so I looked and spotted this tiny cat wobbling down the street. I went and picked her up and said oh my god I have to help and keep this cat. I put her in my jeep and went to the vet. She was terrible sick with distemper, she weighed .6 lbs. Not even one pound! She had terrible eye infections and she was still a very small baby. Well I said what can I do- the vet said she will probably die, but you can give her this medicine for distemper, this ointment for her eyes and you will have to bottle feed her Simalac. So I did all those things and my Runty is still with me today. She is 15 now. The other cats were also street cats and I love them, but none are like my Runty. The dogs- well, my husband did that. I was doing dishes one day looking out the window and my husband pulls up and out comes this Masitff. He brought it in- I was scared to death. I told him hell no, get that thing out of here. I told him to take it to his mom's. I knew he was getting a dog, but had no idea it would be like that! And mind you I was always scared of dogs! So about 2 weeks went by and I said ok- go get the dog. So as it turns out the dog is the greatest protector and the biggest lover ever! She is such a baby, she thinks she can sit on my lap. She is now my dog not my husbands! LOL. And I swear when she is no longer with me I will specifically get another Mastiff. Now Nija- she was supposed to be a sheep dog as we had sheep for a while. Well the sheep thing didn't work out thank god, but then here comes Nija to live in our house also! She is a sweet, sweet dog also, but the fur is just ridiculous! We went through 3 vacuums in about the first year and a half we had her. So we ended up with a Dyson and that has worked out great! Anyway- I have more animals than ever anticipated, but I love them all! And I don't have that much fear of dogs anymore!

We have one dog and one kitten, Dog-Gage, Kitten-Figaro (like from Pinnochio:-) Today I was using lacquer on my stairs that I recently removed carpet from and then sanded and stained and, it never ceases to fail that everytime I use this stuff my Kitten goes absolutely crazy from the smell of it (it smells like Catnip!). She runs all through the house meowing at the top of her lungs and makes love to her catscratch post that we sprinkle catnip on top of! She is such a goofess:-) My dog, everytime he goes out to use the bathroom in the cold, will come in and get between my or my husbands legs and stand there until we give him a good rub down to get him warm! We have the wierdest bunch at my home:-) Great topic once again, Debbie!
