When she was just a young child, my daughter Melanie (theycallmemartha for RMS buddies) wouldn’t end a telephone conversation or a visit without saying, “I love you.” When she was older and I pressed for an explanation, she said that too many times she had heard people say (especially at funerals), “I wish I had told them that I love them.” So wise for her years, Melanie vowed to ensure that no one in our family would ever have such regrets. Now, face-to-face, phone, or even e-mail conversations among any of us don’t conclude without those three little but immensely powerful words. This is one family tradition that I hope everyone will adopt.
Now that is awesome Sara! Something we should all do, but too many times forget or are in a hurry! So set the record straight Love to all infinity and beyond, always, every conversation, email,etc......XXX000
Sara, both of my boys ( ages 39 and 34) do the same thing. Don't know why but they have always done it. In person it is always followed with a hug. So many people can't express feelings or emotions and I am so glad we can. Sara, after all of the things we have shared I think we are related! lol
Hi sweetie! This is GREAT that you are blogging! I have to run right now but will be back later tonight to REALLY welcome you to blogland! Wish I had the guts to try it! XOXO, Pinky
When I was a little girl (I now am "40-something"), Sunday nights at our house often meant watching our families home movies. I LOVED watching them! I would ask my dad if we could see them, and he would say "Go ask your mom". I would ask mom, and she would then say "go ask your daddy"! So, my dad would haul out the projector and big white roll down projection screen, and the box with all of the movie reels, while my mom made big batches of popcorn.
My hubby & I surprised my parents for their 60th anniversary by converting some of the movies to video (wish we'd had the forethought to put them on dvd!). It was pretty expensive, so we did about 1/2 of them. Hopefully some day we can do the rest to dvd. Anyway, we had my family over on Christmas day this year, and hubby suggested that we watch the video. I didn't think anyone would be interested, but it was a big hit! Our house was full of laughter (and a few tears, too)as we remeniced. My dad passed away 5 years ago from leukemia, and I hadn't watched them since then. It was neat to watch from back in the 50's to late 60's, to see my parents & siblings before I came along, and to see me as a little girl. I so glad that I was brought up to enjoy the little things in life, like hot buttered popcorn and old movies!
Thanks for the invite! You're doing a great job! Fun to read! Liz
Donna, that is an awesome story to share! My husbands grandfather has a bunch of home movies as well. When my hubby and I where dating and we would see them for visit they would bring them out. I know he has converted some and hopefully someday we will have them. But that is a wonderful tradition, and I thank you for joining and sharing:) Debbie
Odd how the moviee thing came up. My 2 brothers and I just had all my folks 8 mm tapes put on DVDs. Yes it was pricey but my parents were thrilled. They just had there 51st anniversary Dec. 27. So that was our gift for them. They had their wedding on the tapes and then of course us kids growing up.
Hey Debbie, Since I am sitting here having a late lunch, my two traditions deal with food. Our tradition at Christmas is to make ravioli from scratch & have it for Christmas dinner. My grandmother & mother both made it and now my husband makes it, too. He also has to make an additional main coarse such as a standing rib roast, or duck because he finds having only ravioli a little odd.
Our second "tradition" is a little silly and started out because I wanted my girls to eat their vegetables. Chicken stew is one dish that the whole family loves & my youngest daughter (who is in high school) asks me to make it often. I use pre-peeled baby carrots in the stew & cut them all up into slices except for one, which I leave whole. When the girls were little we would make a big deal when one of them got the whole carrot in their serving. To this day, whoever gets it in their bowl announces it to everyone as if they had just won a prize.
These are all making me smile from ear to ear, they are all sooooo different too. Thanks for sharing:)
My tradition for the last 10 years is to go to my grandpa's home every Saturday. I want my daughter to know him as well as I do. Nobody is here forever so even though it's time consuming, every Saturday we spend an average of 5 hours with him. I cherish the relationship we have and am so lucky to still have him in my life.
You make me realize that there are more to traditions than what we think of. Like visiting with your Grandfather weekly, your right that is tradition and something you have done for a long time. Or as Sara mentioned saying I love you, it really is the simple things in life!
Hi Debbie!!! Hope your mom is doing well! My tradition is.....every year my husband and I get two xmas trees, one for us and one for my grandmother. We always go the friday after thanksgiving, load the two 6 to 8ft trees on the car, and make our delivery. Then that weekend my kids and I head to gramma's to help decorate!!! And Sara, my family does the same thing! Since I can remember, all of us...cousins,aunts,uncles doesn't matter who! We always say "love ya" ;)
For many years we enjoyed our Christmas tradition with an annual Christmas breakfast at my mother's small cape cod home which lovingly fit all of our neighbors, friends and family. My mother would bake several cheese puffs made with eggs, cheese, ham and bread while relatives would also cook made to order eggs and canadian bacon. The cheese puff was really the award winner, however. People would file in and out all morning. Every year, we could count on seeing friends and relatives that we didn't see all year. I would drive over an hour through snow covered roads just to enjoy the holiday festivities. Unfortunately, my mother and father passed away years ago an the tradition faded, however, some are captured on video which I still pop in every once in a while and immediately it brings a smile to my face. Miss you mom, xo xo
Well Mom, now we have the tradition of you and Ang coming every Thanksgiving, taking the boys for their early X-mas presents, and then heading out for a weekend family adventure.....I love that tradition too!!:)XXX000
Because I am divorced and remarried, we had several years where a lot of our traditions changed because of circumstance. Now a blended family, I decided to start new traditions that included my son, step daughter and step son. Holidays were tough on everyone for the first few years until we had new traditions that became a special part of all our lives. Every Christmas morning we all get up and open our Christmas gifts and I make a big brunch complete with potato pancakes, taylor ham, french toast , fresh squeezed orange juice and blue berry muffins. It’s important that the food is always the same because the kids decided on the menu. After breakfast the kids go see their other family but for all of us, this is our favorite Christmas get together. The lesson: It’s never too late to start a new tradition.
My husband's family gets together twice a year every year so that the family doesn't drift apart which is so easy to do if you don't make a point of getting together and staying in touch. We get together every year around Christmas and then once in the summer.
Hi Debbie!! So glad you are doing this! One of our family traditions is that we go to my Mom and Dad's every Sunday after church. My mom cooks a big dinner and my brother and his wife come. We eat and shoot the breeze for a couple of hours then head back home. Lots of good times!!

Hi Debbie. Good to see you here and miss you on RMS. We don't have any family traditions that I know of but I just wanted to say Hi. I'll check back more often. We've been offline for a few days.
