EnTertaining~~
Saturday evening my family and I where invited to a good friend of ours for dinner. Very nice evening indeed....when I do not have to cook, of course it would be delightful:) I started thinking how much I too like to entertain for family and friends. Do You Host Dinner parties? If you do, is there something special you do each time to make it a success? Do You make a special punch? Do you make it formal or casual? Do You prefer outside to inside entertaining? I would love to hear all about it!!

I love to have people over, but don't do it often. I don't know why! When we do, I try to impress! I make a mean BBQ shrimp that always inspires oohs and aah's! We live on a very social cul-de-sac and more often than not, it is a get together in someone's driveway with all the kids running around! I really want to be the Super Woman of our street, but my house isn't ready yet for full on entertaining. I am so darn weird sometimes!
This is horrible, but I also don't always like having people over because their kids are like a whirling tornado through Jemma's room and the playroom! I always help clean up before we leave anyone's house and I find that others don't do that. I know it is horrible of me, but sometimes when I see that EVERY puzzle is on the floor and all the tubs have been dumped... I get so stinking mad!!! It isn't even that the parent's don't want to. I think our playroom is upstairs kind of out of the parent zone and when kids come down to leave, they don't think about the damage that lies in wait for us!!! I need to get over it!
I don't host dinner parties. I have had family for holiday gatherings, but that is it.
Kathryn, I totally understand when kids are little 4,5,6 I did not want a bunch in my home either. Now that the boys are older it is great. The kids are all respectful, and I make sure everyone does their part in cleaning up...by now they get the drill. I love to entertain, and so does my husband. That is why we also have the bar area, after dinner we go and hang out there and play games, so much fun!!~ I will check out your FB pic later on. I never go on there anymore LOL, just a quick check in is all now that I am blogging.
Kim, I would have thought with your beautiful home and DR you would entertain more.....
We have more parties for our kids than we do for our friends. We also have a lot of kids over our house to eat & spend the night. What impresses teenagers is FOOD! At least the teenage boys. LOL! I keep lots of snack foods such as mini tacos from Trader Joe's & frozen pizza's in the house just in case my girls bring friends over.
I love throwing theme parties. My girls are past that age now, but that was my favorite. My last theme party was a Hollywood birthday party. I made stars like the ones on the Hollywood walk of fame with each guests name on them, a special cake & a Hollywood sign for the table. That was fun! My daughters had fun helping make the decorations too.
The last grownup theme party we had was when Trader Joe's opened in Charlotte in Aug 2006. All the food was from TJ's & I made a sign similar to the one's they have in their stores. We also wore Hawaiian shirts like they do at TJ's & we handed out leis at the party.
We also have neighbors over for Holiday dinners, but we should have them over for dinner more often. My husband used to be a chef, so does most of the cooking when we have friends over. I just have to buy the groceries, clean the house & set the table.
Pam your house sounds like fun!!~ My first themed kid teenage party was this past Halloween...Alex and his friends had a ball, and I am certain he will want another one next year!
Oh, sweet Kathryn... How fortunate for you that there is a "playroom" to mess up. Why not make darling Jemma's room off limits when there are too many little munchkins around?? I know that she has special things that she wants to share from her room, but maybe you two could decide that before hand? Maybe place selected items in the playroom in a spot where she can access them if she chooses?
It has been MANY years since I have had to deal with those issues, but I was so like you... a place for everything, etc. Then, about thirty years ago, I read an article that changed the way I handle things. But, wait! This is another subject, for another day!!!!!!
I'm sure that you already are thought of as "SUPERMOM", and the rest really doesn't matter!!!
(It sounds like you have the perfect neighborhood to organize a "progressive" dinner. So much fun!!)
Getting back on the subject, we host really fabulous parties, because we have lots of time to plan them! I always ask guests to bring appetizers that they love. We provide everything else, including wines from every region, and always 90+ points!! Our party mantra is "Life is too short to drink cheap wine"!!!(We save the "cheap" wine for us, as we have found lots of really great wine for under $15! :)
I do a pork tenderloin with bleu cheese and merlot that is UNBELIEVABLE!! Add oven browned potatoes and some carrots and a salad. I also do salmon, easy, easy, easy! My favorite simple dish is chicken parmesan. Always turns out perfect, no matter what else distracts me!!
Siouxzee sounds like a recipe exchange should be in order....I want the pork tenderloin recipe, gosh that sounds good!!~
Do you want me to give out my "secret" recipe now or is that the
subject for tomorrow???
I love to give dinner and parties, cooking is my passion so 90% I want to entertain my guest at home with my cooking and obviously after a party I love their remarks, delicious, tasty, good party ( everyone need:) )... My kids are grown up now so I dont have that botheration of messing of toys and all that. if they have their friend thep keep them in their room.
Normally I like casual dinner parties, and always my guest are large in numbers thats why you dont see my parties of 6 to 8 persons a arranged dinning table and all that, with a number of 15 to 20 guest normally it is type of buffet.
I love to cook and present all that in a colourful way with some fresh flower arrangement some candles, I love salads so there is always two to three type of salads and that gives your table colours too...
