My mom passed away in 1997 and didn't have very much at all in terms of heirlooms or passing down. She had very little money and got a small life insurance policy that I had to split with her husband. I decided to purchase my dining room set with that money so I could have something from her to pass down to my children. We have always selected homes that have a prominent dining room so I can have room for my "treasure" from my mom. I also have her jewelry box. It is nothing fancy and is filled with costume jewelry, but it is special to me. I also recently found a cross stitched picture she made for me of ballet shoes. I am going to frame it and hang it in my daughter's room.

My grandmother on my mom's side made me special special little ceramic things. I have two bowls done in a mother of pearl glaze with unicorns on top and a small heart shaped box. Jemma loves them and is so gentle and careful with them!

One day I will inherit a table that my great grandfather made in the late 1800's/early 1900's from cherry trees on our farm. We still have the chairs that he hand caned. It also has the hutch that he bought from Sears and Roebuck in 1918 to go with it. My stepmom wants to give it to me now, but my dad doesn't want to give it up yet. I will wait forever if it means my dad will still be here!

RMSers may have seen the baby bed that my welder-by-trade dad made for me and that has been passed down now to my granddaughters (my daughter included a picture of the bed in a bedroom re-do). I call it the "Elf Bed," since my father told me he was helping Santa's elves with a special project when nosey little me tried to see what he was making. The bed has withstood the test of time and I hope that someday my great-grandchildren will get to enjoy it, too.

My favorite heirlooms are the hand embroidered linens my grandmother made before she was married. My mom told me that my grandmother and her sisters would sit on the front porch of her house & crochet for hours. She made intricately crocheted runners, doilies, pillow cases, towels, etc. for her hope chest. It is unbelievable to me that a young teenage girl made these beautiful things! I also have one of my grandmothers aprons which is made from a blue & white fabric with blue rick rack on the edge. I love wearing it.

I am enjoying hearing about all your treasures. Kathryn maybe you will get the set sooner only because your Dad may be willing to give it up....Pam I bet you look cute wearing your Grandmothers aprons!

I inherited my Mom's mom's china when she passed away and I love it. I don't have any other china. When my Dad's mom passed away I inherited her diamond wedding ring because I was the first born granddaughter and she did not have a daughter to leave it to. My sister got the diamond engagement ring. I used the diamonds out of her ring and had them reset into a new setting.

The precious thing I have from my great grandmother are some very books about emboridery and stitching, I love it and now I use it for my silk scatves painting, those patterns and design are so unique and beautiful that whenever I paint everyone asks about the pattern, I really love those books.
I have some very antique jewwellry from my grandmother, although I m not very found of jewllery but they are beautiful specially the ear rings, huge and typically traditional in gold.. I love them .
