RMS didn't like it but I do!~ DecOratiNg usIng PlAtes

Why pick this post? Because I am proud of me for staying true to myself and honest with you. I have been wanting to  write a little about an experience I once had on the decorating site RMS/HGTV.  Most of you may be familiar with this site.
OnCe upon a time in the Month Of NOvember 2008, Miss Debbie was watching HGTV, not once, not twice, but all the time.
I saw this Show hosted by this dude named Angelo called Rate My space.  The show was pretty neat so I thought I would check out the website.  I anxiously uploaded up my kitchen pictures, a bit nervous I will say,  yet excited to see what my reviews would be. I was pleasantly surprised, and receiving some nice feedback and opinions. I in turn, as time went on,  spent my free time helping others. At times private pictures where being sent to me and I offered up suggestions, and was so happy to do so. I met some wonderful, talented women, who encouraged me often to start my own blog. I thought no way could I, I do not know what I am doing on the computer.
Funny, I will not allow my boys to utter the words CAN'T do it!~ Yet I did not have the confidence in myself. That since has changed, and I feel confident enough to take risks. As the saying goes, no risk no reward.

I made some wonderful connections on RMS.  My gal pals on RMS slowly but surely jumped on the blog wagon after I started mine. They certainly saw the fun I was having, and I am still encouraging more to do so!~  I seriously thought in the beginning, what would I have to offer to the blogging community that is not already out there?  And who would want to read? and see my projects or my home, and my painting and re purposing jobs?  I mean I am a nobody out here...(not really I am a super star did you see my commercial? or Oprah audition?)  I am a minor celebrity in my town NOT   All kidding aside.
My experience on RMS is what lead me to blogging.  I cannot not be happier.  I would have never met or read any of your stories, and made the connections that I have.
I did receive on a time or two, or three some  rude comments on RMS.
My creative spirit was not broken, it in fact was driven.

Moving on to my actual reason for this post. Ha you thought when the hell is she getting off her soap box!?~
One of my thousands of  download on RMS was my bedroom, which is always changed up per season. However, the poster and plates are always part of the change.  I love to decorate using plates, why? Because they add color, texture and to me the unexpected art.  Not to mention we all have plates, and they are inexpensive way to add flair to a room.
With vintage plates, modern plates, all the shapes and sizes, I do believe you can achieve  really unique wall art by incorporating them.  I remember all too well the first negative comment I received regarding my plates on the wall in my bedroom....it went something like "Plates on the bedroom wall that, is stupid???" I started to question myself, and think wow is it stupid, why do I like that?  I came to the conclusion and obvious rational that of course my taste would not suit all, and at the end of the day, I still liked them, and continue to have them, however, I change them out per season, so now I have even  more Plates~~ So suzie77 you never did change my mind..
Oh and may I mention my poster got picked on a few times on RMS, just baffling why I have a hot chocolate french poster over my bed...why because I like it!!~:) and the colors are fantastic! to ME.....
Now that I have given you my plate tutorial of decorating let me show you some ideas I also found on line

Thank you for stopping by and leaving  comments.  I read each and every comment and do my very best to respond back to you and visit your blog.  I love to give back to you what you give to me.
Toasting to you!~ Cheers! My husband takes awful pictures....and gosh do I need some SUN!
Linking up with a few lovely hosts today, more so to inspire, and be inspired by what you love, and do not ever allow anyone to break your spirit! Rock on and do what you love!~ Please take a moment or two to stalk around my site and see what else may spark your interest.  I have a little something for all to enjoy! I will be away for the weekend so if I do not get back to you right away I will see you early next week! ENJOY!~

RMS is always a touch and go kinda thing. I posted rooms on RMS way back in 2006 when it first came on board. I can remember two amazing spaces on RMS that I have been searching for...for a long time. One of them was an amazing Asian styled home nestled in the mountains. I think some of the RMSers wasnt so nice and they left.

Now I do not like the Angelo character. I think his designs are 100% awful.

Yours. I like.

Wonderful post, Debbie!! :)

You are extremely talented when it comes to decorating. It's your home and you can decorate it how you and your family like it!

I'm glad you didn't let anybody get you down! There will always be someone out there who wants to gripe!

I love blogging too. I just write about what's on my mind at the time, and if people like it, fine. If not, that's fine too! :)
That's why they're OUR blogs!!

Hope you have a great day!! :)

Random thoughts: That is a gorgeous picture of you, you just look so happy - which must mean your hubby doesnt take such bad pics after all, if he can get that smile out of you!! Second, I think its hilarious that you remember the negative commenters screen name, I love it! Third, you hit the nail on the head when you said the color works FOR YOU, that is what it is all about - what works for you, and if you can inspire even one person, you have made quite an impact. Loved this post!

When people don't have anything nice to say, they should say nothing at all. What happened to manners and common courtesy.

The most important thing when we decorate our homes is that we surround ourselves with things we enjoy, items and colors that inspire us.

I like what you do, Debbie, and how you change it up. You're a girl after my own heart. Don't let the negativity you may encounter influence you in the least.

Debbie, I have always used plates to decorate with since the early 90's, in my first apartment with hubby. I remember my grandma making a smart comment about plates on the wall. I never let it get me down and still decorate with plates on the walls. As for the RMS, I discovered it one day and then saw your postings, loving your decorating style. When you mentioned you were starting a blog, I thought I would check it out and see what it was all about. What a great discovery and alot of my favorites from RMS were bloggers! So thank you for this wonderful discovery! Great pic by the way!!! :) (oh, loving the spray paint, too)LOL

Well I am thankful for RMS because it is where I met you dear! And yes, you are an encourager and likewise we've got another creative soul over there I've been encouraging..paying it forward! Last time on RMS I posted my den pics and one person gave me several larges posts about everything that I should do which amounted to changing the room entirely, it was insane. I wanted to say if I make all these changes then it will no longer be my room or one I would like for that matter. And don't worry some picked on my bedroom too. That's whats so great about blogland, the women here know how to be nice. Thanks for keeping your blog real! I like that!

Good grief, plates have been on every wall in a home since early victorian times, maybe before. I have to say some folks who post comments cant do a dang thing themselves, with or without plates, so they make it their mission in life to try to make others feel bad.
PFFFTT is what say to them..
You hang all the plates ya want to, anywhere ya want to.

I only have one plate in my house. It's a Spanish female flamenco dancer. Even though it doesn't go at all with the soft romantic style I would like to have in my house, I love to display this piece of my culture. It's my plate, it's my heritage, it's my house, it's my laundry room.

Why did I put it there? Because I can and because why not. :-) Of course, if I posted on RMS I bet somebody would say it's in a weird place... I know. And that's why me and my plate are so UNIQUE.

I love your plates in your bedroom, Debbie. And the chocolate picture there too. It's more: I love your whole house! :-)

We don't need those rude people in RMS control our lives. If you need a true opinion, here in your wonderful web page. You should create a paper magazine. Seriously.

Thank you for inspiring us, for being our friend and for always being so honest. :-)

You see anyone criticizing your flair with hanging plates is merely showing their ignorance. For you are clearly a lady with great taste and refinement - in England at least the gentry have been displaying their valuable plate ware in such a way for centuries. I love the way you use bold splashes of colors throughout your home and how you use the plates to enhance your overall look. You should have your own show, definitely!

So now I know how you became a blogger and am learning a little more about you, which is so interesting.

How can the thought of my life with one 3 year old seem exhausting to you though - you do far more than I ever could!!

My husband is also a terrible photographer, every shot of me ends up like yours, blurred with the top of the head cut off. But you still manage to look lovely whereas I on the other hand do not!!

Great post!

What a great post. From the heart. :) I have heard about Rate My Space. I love looking at everyday people's "spaces" to get ideas! I too have discovered SO MUCH talent and creativity from blogging! I had NO idea all the talent that was out there. My creative juices have really been flowing lately, and I think blogging might have something to do with it.

As for the rude comment. I haven't experienced any yet, but I know it will happen one of these days. I hope to deal with it how you did. I don't know why people feel the need to write a rude comment. I mean, it's not like you're FORCING them to look at your creations. I personally love your taste. I also adore plates used as decor. I actually have some Mackenzie Child plates that I use for decorations. They are so unique!

I enjoyed and appreciated and understood everything you said in this post..about people trying to break the spirit, etc. to the wonderful crazy cast of characters I now call my friends.

Your husband's pictures of you aren't bad- you ought to know that!

The mean person is losing it. Keep doing all of what you're doing. Your house looks stunning! Take it from me.

What great inspiration - I just love plates hanging on the wall, but I must say I don't have a single one! Thanks for linking up to Be Inspired last week!

Plates on the wall! How great is that. I have even painted a wall and used plates as the circles on it. 3 D it is! Using 3M velcro tabs to hold them up. Works great on textured walls where a nice even lined circle is a bugger to get on those if ya paint. RMS is so done. I tried once again short time back and noone seems to be active on it but ya can sure tell whos still hanging with their new name!! LOL What a superb world we could have if everyone just put forth positive creative energy as you do Debbiedoos! I certainly dont get over here often enough but am going to make a pledge to do so as a little "Me Time "is needed and what a better flow of energy then here. Thanks Debbie!!

Love plates!! I have them in most of my rooms(even my powder room).

Soo glad that everyone has different tastes. How boring life would be if we all dressed or decorated with the same things. Half the challenge of decorating is using something you love in many different ways. The same dish (or plate) can be used dozens of ways.

Keep on inspiring us.
