Alphabet Thursday

Once again it's time for our lessons!  Hosted by Jenny Matlock http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com. Today is the letter G.  I had two G's in mind.  I chose Gilda Radner.  For one, there is a blogger Sparkle Farkle who has her as a profile pic.  Every time I saw it I smiled.  I LOVED Gilda Radner back in the days of Saturday night live.  I could even do a great impression of her at the time, and I would make everyone laugh.  On a sad note she was taken away way too  young.  However, her time here was magnificent, she was so talented, funny and smart. Here are some great pics of Gilda.....and let me know if you use to watch her on Saturday night live...

1946
Comedic actress Gilda Radner was born in Detroit. Gilda Radner, a comedic actress, studied drama at the University of Michigan before dropping out and moving to Toronto. She made her stage debut in 1972. She was also a member of the Second City comedy troupe before becoming one of the original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" of TV's "Saturday Night Live." On "SNL," Gilda Radner created a gallery of funny and eccentric characters. She also received an Emmy Award for the 1977-78 season. She stared in several films, including Hanky Panky (1982), The Woman in Red (1984), and Haunted Honeymoon (1986). Gilda Radner died of cancer in 1989, just prior to the publication of her autobiography, It's Always Something.

I read Gilda's book years ago. And I remembered it so vividly. It is very wierd to me now that I am struggling with the same cancer that she lost her battle with.

thanks for sharing and quite a lovely tribute

Oh, what a great choice for G. This brought back so many memories, I loved SNL in it's heyday. And Gilda Radner was a huge part of it. Loved Rosanadana, but my favorite character was Emily Litella. Never mind.... Kathy

I loved watching her. She was so funny. Has it really been that long since we lost her? I use one of her quotes sometimes on my E-mail signature line. "I always wondered why someone didn't do something about that...then I realized I was someone."

*before taking a bite, raises tuna fish sandwich (<– Ms. Radner’s favourite food!) in a salute to America’s BIGGEST sweetheart* Here’s to Miss Gilda, the most perfect “G” ever! What a lovely and loving tribute to my hero, your blog entry is! Yep, whenever my straits are dire, I ask myself, “What would Gilda do?” More times than not, the answer is to laugh!

Thank you, because what an honour it is for me to be mentioned in the company of Gilda Radner! And thank you, again, for tuning me into this particular blog entry of yours. Puppet (my daughter) and I have been out of town. Having just returned late Tuesday (and with unpacking, and laundry, and dishes to the ceiling that my husband “forgot” to wash while we were away), I might have missed reading it completely.

Got room for a smith more Radner-y trivia? Did you know Gilda was offered the part of Laverne and Shirley's Shirley Feeney by Penny Marshall, but out of loyalty to Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, she chose to honor her contract with SNL?

Also: Gilda played Mike Myer's mother in a television commercial for British Columbia Hydro when he was just ten years old. Over the course of the four-day shoot, Myers developed a major crush on Radner and cried on the last day of production when they "went their separate ways."

It may sound crazy, but I miss Gilda Radner everyday. I leave you with one of my favourite quotes of hers: “Humor is just truth, only faster.”

For more looksees at Ms. Radner, come see my Gilda Radner Person Page (TV.com) at

http://www.tv.com/gilda-radner/person/87145/summary.html?tag=mini;content_nav

Thanks!

God, this Radner-bonding... I feel like we've just cemented our friendship! Thank you, Gilda!
