If you are familiar with my blog, by now you have all figured out....I REALLY love where I live!~
And if you are NOT, welcome, let me show you some
Lake living!
Everyday I truly look around and feel there is no other place in the world I would rather be.
That is a great feeling too. It is a small suburb surrounded near big city life. We have the best of both worlds...if we want peace and quiet we have it. But then we are a cars ride away from beautiful cities surrounding our area. Our closets city is Charlotte, North Carolina, which is 15 minutes away.
One of our favorite things to do in the Summer is enjoy our Lake. Lake Wylie that is.
This
dam impounded the
Catawba River and created Lake Catawba, which was utilized to create
hydro-electric power. In 1905 the Catawba Power Company became part of the Southern Power Company.
In 1924 the Southern Power Company raised the level of the dam and a built a new Catawba Hydroelectric Station to replace the original. This new facility opened in August 1925, increasing the surface area of Lake Catawba from 668 acres (2.7 km
2) to 13,400 acres (54 km
2). The Southern Power Company was merged with
Duke Power Company in 1927.
In October 1960 the power station was renamed the Wylie Hydroelectric Station and the lake was renamed Lake Wylie, both in honor of
Dr. Walker Gill Wylie, one of the founders of the original Catawba Power Company that had created the lake and become Duke Power.
Not only is the Lake beautiful, the homes on the water are spectacular.
Let's start with the hot tour guide!~
Yes Mike is an awesome boater, he learned pretty quickly. We have several launching stations in our area....some better than others, however Mike has done pretty well with all of them.
Next up the AMWAY house.
If you have ever heard of AMWAY...let's just say this family had to be at the top of the Pyramid, as their home is spectacular.
And from what I hear, they are a super kind, generous family. I would love to go inside their home to take a peek.
Their grounds alone are spectacular.
They truly have a little slice of heaven here.
This house here is my favorite on the Lake...I love the stone and wood, and they have a very private setting. Built in pool too.
This is one of the very few flat backyards in our area...they have a nice set up. I always notice flat backyards here, they are far and few between.
I have to be honest....this is my least favorite thing to do on the lake is tubing.
By the end of it, I feel ill, and I am a nervous wreck the entire time. This never stops anyone from having fun though. Some times our friends even want to give it a try
This is my friend Lisa, my son Jack in the middle and Lisa's son. She started off pretty cool...all I can tell you is by the end she was screaming to get off. By the end of the night, she could barely walk, She said every muscle in her body was killing her.
Hope you enjoyed our fun day of play on Lake Wylie!~ Tell me a little something fun about where you live.

Oh that is too funny about your friend!!! We used to have seadoo's and I remember the muscle soreness.
To answer your question, NO...we can't wait to get out of So. Ca. It's so overpriced it's nauseating, it's smoggy and going anywhere will give you a coronary because of the freeway traffic. There's huge tension because of the illegal alien issues. The pay is horrible...I could go on forever. But I have to live here for now because of my kids. We moved to FL for 6 months but had to come back due to custody issues but my Kyran LOVED it there and he loved the Pepsi plant there. Once the boys are independent and all of legal age (2 down 1 to go) we're sooo out of here!
Your area looks gorgeous! My in laws used to sell Amway years ago.
Looks like an amazing area!! That AMWAY house is phenomenal! I'd love to live in a place like that.
We live in an area that's pretty quiet, close to lakes and our shopping districts are pretty nice, too.
I personally would LOVE to live in the house in an old Victorian home with a huge porch.
I have never tried tubing before. I have been skiing, but that was many years ago when we had a boat. Skiing killed me the next day. That Amway house is huge. I tried selling that for a very short time. I am no sales person. I hated it. Looks like you had a good time. I kind of like where I live, but I would prefer a quite neighborhood instead of this busy road we live on.
WOW, lake Wylie is beautiful! The homes are truly wonderful. I bet it's so fun to be out on the lake and going by all those neat houses.
Hmmm, I live in a small rural town. I would say the people are the best part of living here.
Nancy
Wow you are so lucky to be so near the water. No wonder you love where you live! Thanks for sharing. Great pics!!
heather
I loved learning about the history of your lake it looks so fun there....a saying that I love is "if you are lucky enough to live by the water, you are lucky enough"
My town is Gig Harbor, WA. I didn't know what Gig meant so I had to read some history about that....a *gig* is a small boat that goes into a small harbor to see if the big boat can come in to anchor....Gig Harbor is a very tiny cute little harbor that was started with the logging industry, lots of Croatians and Scandinavian families settled here. We have a reputation for lots of interesting little shops, boutiques and great restaurants, one in particular "The Tides Tavern" is so well known for their halibut fish and chips. Being on the Puget Sound they have a dock that is full of folks that sail or motor in just for the big fun that place offers. We have seen T-shirts from the "Tides" all over the country while traveling. Come see us sometime Deb you would love it!
I love lake week-ends. Puts you in a totally different state of mind. Well the Happy Hours are really great at our lake house. So that might help.
Mmm, I want a fish fry now.
Your favorite house is of course, my fav toooooooo. Looks right out of the mountains in Vail. What an amazing cruise you took us on. Thanks for the ride. Off to grab a Strongbow myself now.
Toodles,
Kate
Hey Deb looks like you had a fun weekend!! I have to tell you that the Amway house is definitely my favorite it's just stunning!!Well I can say I really love where I live, we're in a beautiful development with great neighbors and plenty of kids. The only thing I miss is being close to NYC,were only an hour away but growing up I could be in Manhattan in less then 20 mins.
Hi Deb,
I loved this post. Looks like you live in a truly beautiful spot in the world. i see what you mean about the houses, they are amazing.
Great to see your boys having fun in the water.
Have a great week.
Donna xx
I think loving the place where you live is also scriptural - - - didn't the Apostle Paul say, "I have learned whatever state I am in, therewith to be content?"
And I don't think it's too much of a stretch to interpret that state as being one of the states in the United States!!!
:-)
Those houses all look fabulous and I want to go there!!!
I love boating and can't wait for summers so we can take our boat out! We are excited to take Mia out this summer and see what she thinks of it!!!
That was a wonderful tour and so fun to see the big homes. Beautiful! I live outside Atlanta in a small little town. Close to everything I could want. We also live about 5 mins from a State Park and it is gorgeous and one of our favorite places to go.
Hello Debbie,
I must say that although I do not care for my neighborhood, I do like where I live. It looks like you had a fun weekend. I used to love tubing but I have not been tubing in quite a while. Lake Wylie looks like a great place to go boating and the houses you have shown us are fabulous!
My DIL loves her new Coach purse and the key chain. I hope to post about it later this week. Thank you!
~ Tracy
Beautiful homes on the water!
Nothin could be finer than to be in Carolina! Loved hearing about Lake Wylie! You are so informative! We have more family up there too, but I'm not all that familiar with the area, other then their homes. However, I do know it's beautiful up there! I love the lodge looking house, very unusual. You have inspired me to do some lake tours of the mansions on Lake Murray, that will be fun! I don't do tubing either! Our sons love to tube in the motor boat, but I leave all that fun to them! LOL!
those houses are enormous! My goodness...
We live close to the mountains. It is now the perfect season for camping! My favorite thing about where I live now is that even though it is hot enough I'm in sundresses or shorts and tanks, I can still look to the West and see snow on the tops of the mountains. Its beautiful!
Hi Debbie,
The lake is beautiful and I loved the tour of the houses. I love where I live, too, in my hometown, where I have lived all but a few years of my life. Life in a small town suits me fine :)
Robin
Debbie: The lake pics are awesome! I love those homes! Are you anywhere near Clayton, NC? My brother/SIL and their 2 boys live there....I am sooo jealous because I want to move down to NC too! I have to talk my husband into it though...he retires in 8 years (age 55) so maybe then...I'll be putting him to work though when were down there.
I love living south of Charlotte also, Debbie. When we came here from So Cal, we looked at all the lakes around Charlotte... West side of Lake Norman, Mtn Island Lake & Lake Wylie... in all of the Crescent Communities ... We just really loved the natural landscape of Union County and it felt right. I would love to live out further in the country, but enjoy living close to everything. I also think it would be fun to live in a college town, in a small town where you could walk to everything. When we were first married we lived in a little beach town & loved it!
Looks like a great day! Those houses are amazing and huge! Wouldn't it be great to have a look inside!
Your friend is braver than me with tubing! There is not too much out there better than spending a day on the lake with good friends :)
Wow, that is a beautiful place! & I love tubing! So much fun! Have a Great week, Debbie! :-)
Hugs,
Coreen
Oh My goodness I want to live where you do that lake is spectacular!!
Hot tour guide!
The houses are spectacular...love stuff like that. And how much fun is it to be on the water...love the water..
And tell Lisa I thought she was 26 until you told me she was your friend and that was her son. UGH> I need some of your water out there. LOL
Holy crap Debbie! We are pretty much neighbors! I'm about 45 mins from there! If you ever want to go out to dinner one night let me know! We usually go to Gastonia to eat at Longhorns or Texas Roadhouse once a month or more.
Yes! You linky was already closed!=( I will link up next time for sure!
Wonderful post, Debbie! Such a gorgeous lake~ and those lakehomes! It looks like a fabulous area to live in~ I can see why you love it!
Wow! What a beautiful way to spend the day! I love boating...all kinds! It is about one of the only ways to escape the heat here in Texas! The homes you feature are beautiful...and on the water...sounds like a little slice of heaven to me!
I love where I live...it is not perfect...a little noisy...we're in the big fat middle of Dallas...but we are close to everything we love to do and we designed and built our house ourselves so it is hard to complain!
What a great post Debbie!
Enjoy!
Cathy
I just love your web site.It is so lovely :)
Love from Germany
It's a lovely area! I really like the red house with the stone work. Thanks for sharing.
Small state, small town, small corner is my favorite place in the world. It harkens back to the neighborly ways of the 1960's. It's affordable, completely surrounded by either bay or ocean, has mild winters with very little snow, multiple small town celebrations each year, etc.
Enjoyed your tour of Lake Wylie, we're on Lake Norman & I always enjoy looking at the Nascar McMansions by the water :-)
Hey Debbie! We just got back from the lake, too! As a mother, it is very hard to get used to your child flying behind the boat! Ours have been tubing since they were 3 & 4 and progressed to the knee board, then skis and now just one ski! I just posted a "crash" on one ski!! Beautiful area you live in for sure!
So Debbie... I had no idea that we lived so close to one another. I live in Chester, SC.{just south of Rock Hill} My kids love tubing too.
Hi Debbie, Mike it too cute! Your pictures of the homes on your lake are fabulous! I love the Amway house, just beautiful! Thank you for sharing a bit of where you live, it looks so nice!
Hugz,
Kim
Gorgeous houses around your lake! And I like the information about it too.
The tubing looks like fun, but I would be like your friend, all sore and achy!
I always wanted to live by a lake. I like the mts. too.
Your area is very beautiful! Thanks for the tour.
I had to google tubing and I was horrified! I understand you Deb! I am so impressed you've even given it a shot, to know what it feels like. Scary.
Jack looks happy though. Gutsy kid!
Oh, and those homes are beautiful!
How beautiful. Aren't homes on the lake just breathtaking? Let's see a little bit about where I live. It's a small city in Western NY. We have so many great places to visit around here like Allegany State Park. We go every year. We took Gavyn last year and he enjoyed it so much. There is so much history there, and camping there is so amazing. Here is a WW post I did on it last year: http://www.kiddiescornerdeals.com/2009/06/wordless-wednesday.html
Let's see here. I'm close to Lucille Balls birthplace. There are festivals every year, which just took place. It's fun and so many people come to the museum. Everyone complains about our town, but it's beautiful. I could really keep going with everything. Even though it's small here and there isn't a whole bunch to do(night life) it's fun learning about the history of everything. We even moved to Florida for 6 years and came back. It was never home there.
Haha Deb! "Toothless" made me laugh so loud!!! :D :D
Very lovely homes! Great lake too! Just hearing about floating on the water on that 'floating balloon' makes me queezy. :D
I live in a hot vacation spot, in Devon, England. Two blocks from the beautiful beach and gardens surrounding. It's lovely and I love living here.
How pretty. I know exactly how you feel. I love living on our small lake - only trolling motors, so no noise. It's my slice of heaven!
Dropping by from Outdoor Wednesday (post #3). If you haven't registered for our glass vessel sink giveaway, it's open until 5pm EST Wednesday.

That's a fun post. :)
Sydney - City and Suburbs
I live about 2 miles from Clearwater Beach,, beautiful beach and everyone is 'holding their breath'.. afraid the oil is on it's way! Shame...
Great photos of your family day!
Sandy
What a pretty area!
Answer to your question - I love the convenience of where I live. However - Not real fond of some of some of the other issues.
Hi Debbie
You live in a really pretty place! It was nice to see a photo of your handsome husband.
Lake Wylie looks so pretty and those houses are amazing.
I went paddle boating on a lake a few times in my life but never again--talk about not being able to walk afterwards..I was so sore! LOL!
♥ Pat
Those houses are truly spectacular, Debbie! How fun to go boating with the whole family and it's nice that you don't have to go too far to enjoy it. I went tubing once but never again cause it hurt my butt too much, lol. I do love where we live also!...Christine
What a beautiful area. I can definitely see why you love where you live!
Thanks for taking us on the tour of those gorgeous homes.
Jane
Oh gosh, those are real treat to my eyes!
Rain for Watery Wednesday
wow, the houses are fabulous, and living beside the lake is like a dream (i hope you don't get floods out there). great post.
I like to call these homes of the rich and famous, where the beautiful people live. Of course, I'm a far cry from that position in life. Enjoyed your excursion on the lake...a great share.
My Wednesday issue today...FOUNTAINS & all that Ja-a-a-z-z-z Come on over, my door is always open!
I always love homes on the water. So peaceful looking. Tubing...let's just say when my son went on the central Florida lakes, I was best at home. (Add alligators to your list.) I can SO relate to how you feel.
I, too, HATE tubing!! I have ridden that blasted thing twice, TWICE and that was enough for me! I threatened my husband with everything he holds dear if he threw me off! He didn't, but it was still scary as the dickens!! I even threaten him whenmy 17 year old is on there, he REALLY tries to thrown him off!! We live near a lake too and love it!! Thanks for sharing!
Lou Cinda :)
Debbie, it is wonderful that you love where you live -- like a vacation all year long. Such beautiful homes and the water is gorgeous! I love the water!
I can see why you love where you live. The houses are all big and beautiful. The lake is pretty and fun to do all the water activities. I live next to a watershed area and there is a reservoir for the city's drinking water. So it is like we have a park outside out doors. We are very happy here.
My kids would love to do that but me? No way!!! I would be screaming before the boat even left.
Love that Amway house!
Best wishes,
Natasha.
Gorgeous homes!! Talk about a view!?! Don't have much to say about where we live HA! Other than than we are 30 minutes from the ocean and the mountains.
It's so great that you LOVE where you live!!!! So many people aren't pleased with where they're at, it's great that you are.
You live in a spectacular place. Thanks so much for joining "Summer Sundays".
- The Tablescaper
I'm on the other side of the state in charleston! I drive by Tega Cay all the time when I go visit friends in Charlotte. I also HATE to tube. I'm a nervous wreck and can't enjoy myself. Someone always ends up with bruises and its sure not going to be me!
Wow, what a beautiful tour, I can imagine that kind of waterfront life would be posh! Beautiful pictures, thank you so much for the tour and for linking up!
xo
Kate
Loving the lake life! That looks like so much fun to be able to tour your town by boat! Great tour!
