Winter gardens in the Carolinas! {confused state}
How about I take a break from Christmas decor for just a moment and talk about my Carolina gardens.
If you are a long time friend here, you know I certainly am NO gardener.
I do love flowers, and admire all your beautiful gardens, but I just do not have many of my own.
I will say, the few thing I have planted myself, have done well...
but this year, I am quite confused.
I walked outside this morning to water my cabbage and poinsettia plant...
Or should I say soup? Well, anyhow, these bright red leaves on my japanese maple caught my eye...
I tell you they were not there two days ago...

First of all this tree is usually bare until late Spring...
wassup with that? or this I should say?
This tree does not know what to do?
Our weather is warm one day, cold the next...
And my arbor is in need of a serious haircut...
it has NEVER looked like this in the Winter time.
I am not complaining, I am just a non- gardener in a confused state of mind, seeking knowledge is all!
So I leave you with that...perhaps you can tell me what is happening.
This year I have had the attack of the acorns, and now the blooming Winter trees and vines.

I have no answers for those unusual plants growth.Sorry, I'm glad theres no stress with you, thats the way it should be, Happy Holidays right.
I do think the plants look lovely though, gosh a heck of a lot better than all the snow we have!
I have no answers! My Snap Dragons are still blooming and it has been freezing? What... Oh well, the deer can nibble them ;) Love that red and white enamel wear. You keep that on your porch huh? Good to know ;) LOL

It was the warm weather we had the first of the month. On my drive to Southpark Mall in Charlotte on the 4th, I noticed that a bunch of (pink) Kwanzan cherry trees had bloomed. These are the cherry trees that bloom first in March...They just woke up from their short nap!
No answers here either, I'm certainly no gardener. My husband is the one with the green thumb. I'm right there with you though we're in NC and my husband's blueberry bushes are still green..crazy!
I don't have a clue about your leaves, but they're pretty. I thought I saw buds on my Japanese Magnolia today. I hope not!
When I saw your post title, I assumed you meant North Carolina was a confused state. hehehe (That's a proud Virginian saying that to you.) Hasn't it been mild so far this winter? I hope it lasts a little longer until I can get my folks to FL. I postponed their trip a week so hubby and I can go to the Sugar Bowl.
It's so crazy! I think sometimes plants and trees just can't help being confused when the weather is so wacky! They just don't know what the season is, just the temps!
The same thing happened to a couple of bradford pears in my daughter's yard. The leaves changed to a pretty Fall color, fell off, then new blooms popped out! I have an azalea that put out a few new buds in Fall one year.
I am sure it is from all the warm weather we have had. We really have only had a few days of cold in the south here and there. The rest of this week is going to be very warm again for this time of year. No wonder Mother nature is confused.
That is crazy weather to confuse plants like that. Nothing is growing here--too darn cold!!

We were in Dallas over the weekend and there is still a lot of green AND gorgeous color there and also here in Louisiana. I've seen this before and it is a beautiful surprise isn't it?! Great photos, Deb.
I'm in South Mississippi and my red maple tree is in it's full red glory. I have an arbor covered in jasmine vines like yours and it has had yellow flowers on it for days. They finally froze 2 nights ago. I just hope it's (somewhat) cold for Christmas!

I am having a bit of confusion here as well. A few warm days and the fruit tree's have little buds on them. Our Winter is only beginning so..yep. It's an epidemic!

No answer except that it is life... trees, plants either dont have mname or or bare in this season but at least they are the proof of life... so no stress just happy and enjoy that you have life in your garden...Happy if you come to see me at

That is strange. The poor tree is confused! But so I am with the crazy weather we've been having! Love your soup pot on the front porch!
We had a heavy acorn year too. Sounded like rocks hitting the roof with every breeze.
I am sure all the confusion is from this crazy weather. Poor plants! Keep your eye on those buds if we get a freeze snap. They will not like it at all and will need some cover. Now you've got me concerned I need to take a tour around our yard as well! Sorry, that's the best advice I have!
It's definitely from having warm weather Debbie. One year we had a VERY rare 70 degree week in January and our daffodils started to pop out of the ground.
Before the snow blanketed my flower beds I had a few plants already popping up...confused also...but the weather has been wacky everywhere! Have a wonderful day wrapping!
They're just confused Debbie. We can have some pretty wild weather fluctuations in Illinois. All four seasons in one week sometimes.
I'm just as confused as you are! It has to be the weather.
This summer I had tons of hydrangea blooms. In the 11 years since I've planted that bush, I've maybe had 3 blooms at the most. They kept popping up this year even well into October. I just can't understand what the heck is going on!
NC Coastal Blogger here, and I agree, this is a crazy situation with the gardens this year! I've not put out many outside Christmas porch decorations, because my ferns and some pots of flowers are still lush and green. I don't have the heart to discard of them as long as they are still living! I had verbena I thought was dead from the summer heat, and it has come back and is blooming and thriving! Go figure! :)
Debbie, I cannot believe your arbor!!!! I remember when you planted it! I also cannot believe your maple! We are missing the snow we have had the last couple years. I LOVE your colored lights I see on the porch. I have wanted to do color outside, but haven't gotten around to it. I do the inside tree the big color bulbs.
I am so jealous of your garden-even with most of the leaves off =) We just moved to a colder climate, so all I see is snow right now. We used to live in an area that has weather like Seattle-wet, but relatively warm (ie not a full winter of snow). I could grow almost anything there. I'll just have to learn what grows well here ! =)
I know what you mean about strange things happening. I think it's because our weather has not been consistent. One day it's freezing with a chance of snow flurries. The next day it is warm and sunny and you don't even need your coat! The pansies on my front porch are exploding with color! You would think it was early Fall or something. Ha! I say....enjoy the warmer weather. People up north can't even SEE the grass or any color in their yard and probably won't for months to come.
Our weather is confused too. The last few days it's barely made it into the 50's & the next few days is going to be in the high 70's!
Glad to hear that there's no stress :-). Your tree has just been fooled into thinking it is spring.
Weird weather in Georgia too and we are not that far from you. The salvia in your first image does bloom for me in winter and that is one reason why I have a lot of it.
