The fleur-de-lis (or fleur-de-lys; plural: fleurs-de-lis; ) is a stylized lily (in French, fleur means flower, and lis means lily) or iris that is used as a decorative design or symbol. Fleur-de-Lis is a fictional character, a crimefighting hero from France associated with the Global Guardians of DC Comics in the early 1990s.  So now that we have clarification on the symbol.  Let me share with you, my little French pieces I have scattered about here and there.  I have always liked this symbol, it is pretty, and obviously has meaning.
http://www.urbanwanderer.com/images/fleur-de-lis-flower.jpg
On July 9th, 2008, Governor Bobby Jindal signed into Louisiana Law that the State's symbol would be the 'lily flower' or, as it has been known in France for ten centuries, the Fleur-de-lis ! I just found that out two years ago, never knew that!
Here are a few of my favorite Fleur de lis pieces.....

This is a little hallway when you enter from the Garage.  This light is from the 1940's era, one of my favorite lights.  The shield I had custom made many years ago through Ballard designs.
This piece I bought at Kirklands for $5.00 a couple of years ago...I of course spray painted it!
This piece is on the back of our house, the back deck FP exterior wall.

This is another iron piece I found for cheap and my husband hung it outside the mudroom door,

And speaking of French.......

Alex my older son, just asked me the other day what a French kiss was.....I was a little tongue tied to say the least! I did however tell him, and he said OH! That was easy enough.....oh the joys of teenage years!

I love fleur-de-lis!I also love that metal art on the back of your house! So pretty.
Regarding the teenager years ... they are fun and full of drama...If it's not your kid, it will be someone else's kid dragging yours into their drama! I've always talked to my girl's about s-e-x. Whenever I bring something up, they always say "I know mom, you've told me before".
You know they are hearing things at school & you can't leave it up to the Urban Dictionary for them to find the answer to something.

I wonder what has made this motif so popular these days. It's everywhere on clothes, accessories and home decor. I'm a big fan of all things Medieval, so anything along the lines of calligraphy and heraldry catches my eye.

I have never seen a lily shaped like the one in the photo you posted. I agree with Pam, better for you to answer their questions than for them to ask someone their own age or look it up in Urban Dictionary. Be thankful they are comfortable enough to ask!

Thanks for stopping by Atticmag and commenting on Jane's White Firehouse kitchen post.

The fleur-de-lis looks more like an iris than a lily to me... Maybe they're in the same family?

Hey Frenchy, from Le Château des Fleurs, I left you my first comment on your wonderful web page. I suggested you could make a fleurs-de-lis necklace. :-)

This heraldic symbol is also part of Spain's (my country) coat of arms, as it's associated with the Bourbon king dynasty.

Isn't that the tattoo Lady de Winter, the bad girl in The Three Musketeers, had on her arm? Oh, la-la!

Lady Debbiedoos' fleurs are very colourful! Keep on Kryloning!! :-D

Love all your fleur de lis!!! So pretty! Here is something to tell him about a French kiss. One of my BFF's (how cool am I with my ling and all!) married a British boy and lives in England. Well, shortly before they were married, they were there arranging some of the details for the wedding and she was meeting all the family. Daniel's grandpa asked her for a french kiss. She panicked and everyone cracked up. Their version of a french kiss is the kiss on each cheek! She is so modest anyway! She just wanted the floor to open up and swallow her when she thought the grandpa wanted her to stick her tongue down his throat!

Hi Debbie, Love your fleur-de-lis's all about your lovely home. Is that a St Joseph's Lily I see? It is beautiful. I loved your post even though I have a bad taste in my mouth for the French right now. I just got back from a 21 day tour in Europe. Part of the trip was on a cruise ship. We had docked in the south of France for a day trip to Paris. A "Frenchie" union allowed 40 empty tour buses to enter the port and load up with tourists from two cruise ships. They then blocked the gates out of the port with fires and flares. Held us on the buses for over two hours before port security cancelled our tours. Our little French tour guide was almost in tears. She said it was her first day of work in about a week and a half because of the volcanic ash. Some of our Veterans on other tours bound for Normandy were REALLY TICKED!! Fortunately we were welcomed with music and dancing at other European ports. We were supposed to spend an additional two days in Paris after the cruise segment ended but chose not to try it. I still love the French fashion and decor. For now, I will just enjoy it from afar and by visiting your lovely home. As usual you have done a beautiful job with your camera. You have a great eye!! hugs, Savannahgranny
