Christmas tree decorating ideas!

This year I will be getting a new Christmas tree.
I have been thinking on how I want to decorate the Christmas tree this year.
Our tree is old, the lights are out, and it is time.

I have been pondering some thoughts on how I want to decorate.
You see I have so many ornaments, vintage, modern, home made, etc.  I may just want to keep it real simple this year.
How about I show you some inspiration, then I will show you last years tree.

Santa's Workshop Christmas Tree

Loving all the photos.

I did actually make some of these last year, and plan on doing the same this year.

And here is our 2010 Christmas tree.

I really enjoyed our tree last year.

So, how do you decorate the tree?
Traditional, vintage, whimsical?
Thanks for stopping by. I am so behind these days, not sure if I will ever catch up at this point.
The time change has really mussed me up.
Last night, in bed at 9:00pm!
I do appreciate your visits and comments very much. I read them all, and try to answer them as I go.

Our tree has gone glitzy, all glass ornaments. Since not little ones anymore to break them. Every year at after Christmas sales I stock up. Love getting $8 ornaments for a dollar!

This year I'm thinking about using the mesh garland in our tree. I use all of my over the years ornaments. I try to buy a new ornament to represent each child every year. I still get a kick out of hanging the kids first shoes on the tree. I can't wait to follow everyone decorating for Christmas!!

For us the decision making started 3 weeks ago and I've been gathering ever since a piece here and there.

A new tree is always so exciting and I know you'll make it magnificent~!

Haha! I was exhausted yesterday and in bed by that time too last night! All our Christmas decor is on sale at Steinmart so I am definitely thinking about Christmas now. I am going very different in the den then I did last year. But I'm not telling yet so you will have to wait and see. (wink) I am also seriously considering adding a new larger tree to the kitchen in addition to the one I have in the dining room and the one I have upstairs. I can't wait!

I love all those trees but I could never do it. I have collected various ornaments throughout our travels and had a friend ornament exchange over the years. So I love looking at our tree and remembering where each came from etc...

For the last few years, I've done my tree almost entirely in Santas. All different types and styles of Santas! I just love it and love finding new and different versions of Santa to put on the tree.

(I'm having a hard time with the time change too!)

So... the thing I noticed about all the trees you showed is.... white lights. That's the key for me. I love the one in the tub, I think it was number two. Probably no tree here again this year as we will be traveling to DEN to my Dad's. Good news is he has a fab Santa collection all antique vintage wood carved. But, you never know, I may still put one up. As I'm sure I will be making some Xmas colored OWLs to add to my stitched collection. I adore the homemade stuff.

Don't worry about answering everyone, Debbie- No one expects you to when your blog has grown to this size. It would be an impossible task...after all, your life is NOT your computer! That being said, we all know that you love and appreciate all of us.

On to the tree- I have a gorgeous one I bought 2 years ago. Last year I did a very traditional tree and I think I will do the same this year. However, I am one of those weird people that sets up several trees. I have a vintage feather tree with many of its original ornaments. I also have a nautical one for the media room downstairs. Lots of fun. I would really like to flock the main tree but think I would meet with some resistance.

Have a wonderful Wednesday! xo Diana

This post gave me butterflies in my tummy!!! I just love the Christmas season:) I love your 2010 tree but I really love that photo idea...I bet you could come up with something really cute using that theme.

I didn't have a tree for years after my divorce but after meeting Kyran we've had one every year. We bought a fake one (something I swore I'd never do!) and have burgundy and gold ornaments. I really don't mind some gawdiness at Christmas, reminds me of the gawdy Christmases of the 70's and 80's:)

All such pretty trees (including yours from last year). That photo tree is great.

I always want to do a pretty tree with just a few colors or a theme but my kids (and the big kid as well) are not fans of it. I tried it one year & after a week & many complaints, I actually took it all down & redecorated the whole tree! I can't break them of our traditional mish mash of vintage, Hallmark & assorted other ornaments.

I call our tree a hodge podge, ha. I have all kinds of ornaments. This year I'd like to get a new tree. We've had ours for over 20 years. It's still in good shape but I'd like to get one with the lights on already.

Our tree is VERY kid-oriented. With 6 children whose grandmother gives them each a new ornament every year, it's an eclectic mix! Someday I might like to have just a "pretty" tree--but that's not today ;-)

I usually change my colorscheme up every year just because I have so much to work with. I really should just stick to one and then part with the rest that doesn't match. It would certainly cut down on what I have to store! This year, I plan on using alot of silver and white. I use alot of greenery and natural items to decorate with too. I use white lights on my tree. Your tree from last year was pretty! I like your whimsical ornaments on there. Last year I used a blue and green colorscheme. I know Kim posted it on her blog. The year before that was a multi color "toy" inspired theme. See what I mean? Crazy!!

I really love the idea of the tree in the galvanized bucket. I might try that this year. I'm going for a rustic look this year but I'm sure it'll end up being a mis-mash of stuff on there.

Such a beautiful tree and great inspirations! Not sure what I'll do to mine this year, we have a new, active puppy. Going to put the tree up bare for a little bit to see how many times it gets knocked over first. I'm thinking everything on the tree this year will be unbreakable. Good thing I have a lot of cute handmade ornaments!

We bought two new skinny trees in August. Our old tree which was in great shape didn't have the lights pre-hung and had to be completely disassmbled one branch at a time! I finally had it after 12 years so we went for a new look! I'm traditional in my decorating but not necessarily red and green traditional! I've been saving pictures for tree decorating ideas too! I see one ornament on there that looks familiar!! (Norma??)

When I was at Homegoods I bought garland made out of little mirrors, just one strand so I think I'll just add it length wise from the top and squiggle it down. Practically all my decorations were from the DT and it made a beautiful tree! I also bought a new tree last year from Target, my first with the lights already on it, what a relief that was not having to deal with stringing the lights on to the tree!

I want to also tell you that the stencil you added to your ceiling was fantastic, you really out did yourself on that one Deb!

Our tree is decorated for my mood. Now when DH was in the military and deployed over the holidays I would decorate in a patriotic theme. This year I have no idea, my grandsons tree will be decorated with Santas.

Have a great week.

I LOVE the photos ideas. A whole tree at the front door would be amazing.

I've been moving towards pink and chartreuse the past few years (every since I was very pregnant with my little girl) and I think I'll continue that way. Trying to convince my husband that little pink fairy lights in front of the house would still be very manly ( :-)

beautiful tree you had last year,, beautiful.
Our tree is a collection of ornaments, home made, store bought, gift ornaments, always ginger bread men, popcorn and cranberry chains, candy canes , and angel hair on the lights, it doesn't vary much, its a memory keeper for me, more than a fashion piece, I do like glass balls and I have a lot of stain glass ornaments from years of collecting,

My living room tree(the big 12 footer,) I go classic. All red & gold, although I'm thinking this year it may be silver & gold. We collect brass ornaments on our travels and it's always nice to do the, "Remember when..." when putting up the ornaments. This tree is always one we've trekked out and cut down ourselves.

We also have a smaller 7' artificial tree that we put up in the family room every year that is a riot of color. This is the one where all the storybook and sports team ornaments go.

Can't wait to see what you do this year.

I LOVE that second tree! Blue or white spruce are my favorites!!! The more holes the better!
We usually have two trees. One is kind of traditional/vintage. The other is white, with white, silver, and mercury glass ornaments, and lots of glitter.
Oh man, I'm not ready for this.....

As they were growing up, my sons would look sad and depressed if I suggested anything other than their handmade ornaments and traditional Christmas colors. The tree was definitely whimsical. Now that they are teens, they don't care as much. Last year I had all white ornaments and silver tinsel. Our old tree had to go too. I'm doing something different this year, but not completely sure what.

Hi Deb! I love, love your tree from last year. I really like the look of white lights too. We get a real tree each year, and I vary it between a victorian tree and the traditional one with all kinds of homemade things on it. I have ornaments that the kids made in addition to store bought. I wish I had the room to do a different one this year, but where to put all the ornaments?

I am a sucker for the sweet sentimental tree with lots of ornaments from the past! Of course I love a pink girly tree and then there is my kitchen tree. I did 4 trees last year and enjoyed them. Still its a lot of work. I admire the 'designer' trees as I call them, but for me it has to be the memories that make Christmas special. I know what ever you do you will enjoy your tree. hugs, Linda

Debbie we do lots of trees but each one has it's own theme. The girls each have their own up in their rooms with ornaments that they've collected over the years (and can take with them when they move out..sniffle), our family tree is the only real one we do and that's a patchwork quilt of all of our memories. I do a white tree in the living room w/ pale blue balls and silvery accents, a huge entry tree (from my mom) that I just leave as is or add snowy themed ornaments and a Disney tree in the basement. No more trees for ME! :) Whatever you do will be beautiful. Please stop over and enter my giveaway if you can!!

I do think the photos are a neat idea too. And I liked your tree in the loft from last year. I'm a sucker for snowmen!

Ok. So...I tend to over do it at Christmas sometimes. The family room tree gets our "collection" of ornaments. We have been buying ornaments for every vacation that we've taken since our honeymoon plus the kids get a special ornament every Christmas eve (that will become the beginning of their tree decoration when they grow up and move out). Those all go on the family tree. But the kids each have a tree in their room - snow men for one, santas for the other. Then, I put one in the dining room and that one is the one that varies from year to year. There will probably be on in my new bathroom this year...then I like one on the deck out back. And since I've re-decorated the side porch....Good grief...did you have to ask??? I need to go shopping.

I usually have a rafia garland with kind of homespun fabric tied throughout. Also, years ago we started a tradition of each child getting an ornament from Santa in their stockings. Even though the oldest two are in their 20's now they still expect it. Our ornament collection is very eclectic, but full of memories.

Good luck with your tree quest. i usually hate fake trees, they are all so full and perfect. I wish some of the companies would make one that is more like the old fashion balsam trees that are a bit Charlie Brown looking. Any body out there have any solutions I would appreciate a shout out. Debbie, thanks so much for posting. I was in a dilemma about how to decorate my tree (Christmas spirit ain't hittin me yet). The second tree got me charged up. I'm going to use my old ornaments, but I'm going to go through my old photos make some kind of frame and hang them on the tree. I prefer to use what I have, I don't enjoy buying new ornaments (unless I have to)I like that homemade star at the top also, so I guess I'm going to mimic the second tree. Ahhh, My juices are starting to flow!

All the trees are Beautiful, Christmas is such a special time! What I would like to do and what I will do are two different things! I would like to have 3 skinny trees together, like a small forrest, but can't swing it this year... We bought a silver tree several years ago, I thought if I was going with a fake, I'd might as well go all the way fake!
Thanks for the inspiration!

I know it's only early November, but i'm itching to start decorating for Christmas! Growing up, my Mom always packed my ornaments separate from my parents' and my brothers'. And now, I have all of the special ornaments I collected through the years for my own tree. Another Christmas tradition she started was to give us Wallace candy canes every year. I round out my tree with a lot of silvery accents that I've bought as an adult. Decorating my Christmas tree is like taking a walk down memory lane and I love it!

My main tree is filled with mercury glass ornaments from Germany and Poland. I bought all I could while I was there and when I look at the tree, it brings back so many lovely memories! My dining room tree is purple, silver and white. I wrap tulle around it and I just love that! Jemma's tree is a hodge podge of all her ornaments, the ornaments she makes and the birds that she steals off my tree!!

Have you been looking at trees? I found a nice one at Home Depot. I am crazy about lights and feel that there should be 100 lights for every foot. Not many pre-lit trees have that, but I found one at HD!!! The only thing is it has the "normal" branches and then those hard plastic branches. I don't know about those yet, but they do give the tree more texture. What are you looking for?
