Decorating with brass! {is it in or out?}

Is brass in or out of style?  First let me clear up with you, that by NO means do my husband and I follow decorating trends.  Seemed if we did, by the time we would finish a room, a new style would be in.
We have however, gone through a few decorating highs and lows, that we love to look back on and chuckle to our selves.  Like the retro style, the mint green striped couch, and not to mention the plastic pink and black canister set we once owned.
I guess we always knew we liked different and old, just had to figure it out in time.

I found these brass candles sticks at our local thrift store for 50 cents a piece.  I did not clean them as I like the patina aged look to them.

I started looking around and thought, I wonder what other brass we have around here.  Most people are getting rid of brass..they think it is outdated or out of style.  Tis tis, so not true! For the past few years you will notice it is making it's way back.
I recall when we first converted the dining room to a pub room, we were going to change out the hardware on the bar.
Then it grew on us and we started incorporating a little more into the room.

Some are shinier than others...but again, I do not clean them in no way.

Most all the brass pieces we do have, are very old.
This old fire extinguisher has a nice combination of copper and brass.

The horse brasses  my husband found on Ebay and they were very reasonable...

This is an original sign, also purchased off of ebay.
My husband really wanted it, but it was priced way too high at a buy it now.
I told him just for the heck of it, contact the seller and tell him what you are willing to pay.
It worked! We got it for steal.

Even out vintage light is old brass.

The corner candle stick is solid old brass as well.

So tell me your thoughts! Are you a trendy decorator and try to follow what is in style now?

Debbie,

We're going with accessories that are brass. Door handles, knobs, and chandeliers however, need to be updated (in our humble opinion). We had a similar situation at our home (check out Project De-brassify)...

Thanks for sharing!

I think it's natural to follow trends to some extent. One trend I don't care for is granite, it just never grew on me! But I do agree that old brass is lovely...not the cheap 80's brass but the solid, vintage type. I love your pub room, I think it's so awesome that you guys did that and I bet it gets way more use than a formal dining room would!

I love old brass, too, and never could bring myself to "clean" it. A friend told me a piece needed to be cleaned, and it just didn't have the same appeal after that. You have some wonderful pieces!

I love your Last Supper!

Blessings,
Donna

I think the brass candlesticks look great ... Especially love the different colored candlesticks, and am so thankful to always see something new and different here!! Too much of the same is boring to me so I applaud anything you do that does not follow trends. Someone has to set new ones! Might as well be you!!!

That does it! I'm sticking all my brass in my teal formal living room and shutting the door. If I open it in a couple months it might be in style and I will save myself the trouble of converting it.

Personally, I have always loved silver. However, I have to say, your brass looks very "old world", which I DO like! And, no, I don't go nuts over trends. There are certain combinations that I have always liked, and I go with those mostly. I have also noticed that when people are constantly going with the trends, they also seem to be the people with the most yard sales, lol! And the most shallow pocketbook!!

Now, am I going to get fruit "thrown" at me for that comment?!

So, in answer to your question about the brass, you go girl, whoo!

Boy, as you know from seeing my house, I am definitely not trendy. I have tons of brass that I've had for years and tons of gold that I mix with tons of silver. So I guess all the metals live with me. Love that. Your brass is all fabulous, Love it all. The candlesticks are just unreal. Hugs, Marty

I'm sitting near a brass door handle and a brass fireplace screen as I type this, and they don't bother me one bit. I like a mixture of metals... I think it's more interesting.

What's "in" is what makes you pleased to look at or use. I like so many things from different styles that I couldn't tell you what I like best. I keep changing, not because it's "in", but because I love looking at it for a time.

I love the patina on your brass pieces, Debbie. I don't care about the trends. I'm not about to change out hardware, doorknobs or faucets because something is considered "out". We would all wind up broke if you kept up with every single new trend and got rid of what we already have!

You have some great pieces - I really like the horse ones and the Abby Road sign. If you like it - use it, as it is your home.
I use to have ton of brass - got tired of cleaning/polishing it and sold/gave away just about all of it. Still have a set of candle holders (prob. 2 1/2 ft. tall) that were sent to me from Bangkok in the 60's packed away.

I don't follow trends very much especially now that we are retired folks, but I've always loved brass and always will although I do prefer the antique brass look rather than the shiny type. We have lots of brass around. Actually I like mixing everything so definitely count me out on trendy. Peggy

I do have some brass in the house and though I've thought of changing it, I never have. I guess it's just not that big of a deal to me.

I think brass is a classic and with your style of decor, it's a given.

Me? Trendy?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....HA.

I tried to be trendy but realized that just about the time I would catch up, I was behind again. Because of "trendy" I was stuck with unfortunate upholstery choices which I can't afford to change.

I finally decided to just do what I love.

And I think your use of brass is lovely. I have some here, but it doesn't work as well for me with my ten decorating thumbs.

No not so trendy but do follow some decor changes to see how that fit with my own taste. I'm pretty eclectic in my decor- french country, victorian romance, shabby chic, and even some contemporary pieces. As mentioned, I prefer the old brass not the super shiny cheap look stuff from the 80's. The antique brass just has more depth and character to it. Any of the cheap stuff I acquired I painted if I really like the shape. -_^

I don't follow trends at all either. All the things I have in my home are things I absolutely love. Weather they were pricey or found at a thrift shop, I treasure it all the same because I only buy what I love. Thank goodness I don't have the problem of people giving me home decor pieces, I guess it's because they know how picky I am, hehe.

Debbie, many years ago, I read or heard someone say, that something wasn't in "vogue" (not meaning the mag), but that it would always be in style." And that is exactly how I feel about brass. It has not been as popular if we look at the home industries that tell us that. Yet it is lovely and will always be with us. I realize it is not everyone's taste, but that doesn't mean it is out the door. Love it and all the brass you have, too. Hope you will follow me on Linky.

I always shuddered when people were spraying their quality brass with orb. I have been on several house tours of the mansions here in Southampton and there was plenty of beautiful brass. To me it is classic.
I don't believe in trends. Decorate to your taste, not what someone else likes. I see the decorators are pushing orange again! No thanks, I went through that trend once. And that was enough!
