TEETH obsession!

http://www.worstcartoonsever.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/dog_teeth.jpg
Hi My name is Debbie ***** and I have a teeth obsession!~ It all started when I was a young child. My new teeth where growing in and I had K-9's the size of a pit bull!~ I remember when I was young my Mom taking me to the Dentist, and he clearly said " she will never have a Farah Fawcett smile.  I was crushed, terrible thing to say to a teenager.  Well my Mom did the braces thing, which she really could not afford at all.  The office manager put her on a payment plan of 20.00 per month.  I was so happy to get braces.  My senior year in high school I remember being voted nicest smile.  It was a such an honor.  People have complimented me on my smile for many years.  And not because it is perfect, but I think it is big!~ I had an old boyfriend once tell me I had the smile like the joker from batman ( was that really a compliment?) As years went on, after braces and retainers, and not wearing my retainer, my teeth started to shift!~ Now let me tell you this...GENETICs are strange and so very true when it comes to certain traits.  On my Mom's side of the family, we all have a tooth, the right one to be exact, that protudes out slightly, some more than others.  But it is strange because we ALL have it, cousins, Uncles...we all have it.  That tooth bugged the crap out of me, and about 8 years ago, I decided I would invest the money and get the Farah Fawcett smile I always wanted.  It was hell, and pain like you can't believe.  All four of my front teeth where ground down like chicklets, I would not dare look in the mirror at the time of the procedure, as I would have been scarred for life with that vision.  3 root canals later, I had the best smile money could buy!!~ WELL.....teeth apparently have a good memory, and the damn tooth is coming back!~ This is all I see when I look in the mirror....although not too bad YET!!~ I decided I would go to the ortho and see what could be done.  Now I wear a retainer, I can't speak well, the thing kills me, and I have seen no result thus far!~ I truly am teeth obsessed.  It is the first thing I notice on people, their smile, if they have white teeth, gaps, overbites....I look for other perfect smiles, and other not so perfect smiles.  Living here in the South, I have to say.....my teeth look pretty good in comparison.....as some southerners walk around with no teeths, or one tooth.....they do not seem to care much.  Not so long ago Diane Sawyer did a segment on people in the Apalachians.....poor kids have rotten teeth from too much Mountain dew.  A dentist was willing to go to the town for free and fix some of these bad teeth.  Your smile is very important, and I believe a good healthy mouth speaks VOLUMES!~ So what is your take on a smile? Do you have good teeth?? Do you go to the Dentist every 6 months??

Madonna with all her money, has chosen
to keep her gap teeth? I like it!
Here are some more Hollywood imperfections.......that I actually find to be cute on them....

Many Men find Lauren Hutton sexy, I think it is her teeth? I once read that some roles she has played they gave her a gap filler.....she actually prefers not to have it filled! She is a pretty sexy woman!

Gina Davis has that overbite, that again, I think some Men find sexy....So you get the gist of what I am saying.....I am sure I can find many more....but this is a good start.  If you think of some more, add them to your comment! Even in hollywood where they can afford the best teeth money can buy, they have opted not to....I think that is pretty cool!~

Since I am an orthodontic assistant, I am obsessed with teeth too!!! I have had braces twice and honestly, I wouldn't mind having them one more time. Everyone thinks I'm nuts! All I can say is that wearing a retainer is VITAL to keeping your teeth straight. It's a lifetime commitment. Wish I had realized that when I was younger :).

Debbie, you have a great smile. I did not notice anything imperfect about it. I had braces when I was in college. My teeth were ok, but I had TMJ problems, so I got braces & then jaw surgery. Teeth definitely have a memory because even though I had 6 teeth pulled because they were overcrowded, mine have gone back too their old positions, although not as bad. I would get porcelain veneers on all of my teeth if I had an extra $20,000!!! I have done the zoom whitening & the heavy duty take home whitening, but doesn't seem to have that much effect on my teeth :( My girls have had braces & bonding on their teeth & will get veneers on a few teeth of their teeth, as well when they get a little older.

I grew up with horrible teeth. I was always embarrassed by them. I had a tooth behind a tooth. I was always self conscious and never laughed without a hand over my mouth. When I should have been getting braces, my parents were divorcing so that was not a priority for anyone. In high school, I went to get stuff done and it appears I told my parents that I didn't want braces in my senior pictures so they didn't do it. Hello.... who is the parent here????? Thanks goodness, my husband saw past my teeth and fell in love with me anyway. I got braces when I was 25 after having 9 teeth pulled including one they found buried in the roof of my mouth between my two front teeth! I wore them until I was almost 29! It was the best thing I ever did. I now have a bump on my lip that makes my teeth look odd (to me) from my braces. It doesn't matter though because I can smile and laugh without being embarrassed. My husband said the best thing about my braces was to see me laugh without covering my mouth!

I think men love Lauren Hutton because of her sexy scratchy voice!

Debbie- you gotta hear my tooth story. I've had braces after 4 tooth removals when i was in my senior year at school. I did the entire treatment for about a yr and a half and then quit- WHY? Because i had my board exams to read for and dental visits were a royal pain.

I'm still left with two front teeth, a few not in line and an overbite. I used to care so much. But i CANNOT go to a dentist again. I am scared of them! In fact, my teeth are sensitive with gum recession but i'd rather not go to the dentist to feel the drill killing my teeth AND me all over again. Silly but true.

Now, i just laugh- who cares- i don't- (sad part: my good friend is a dentist AND all she notices on people is their teeth!)

I go to the dentist, but I prefer to keep them natural. I agree, smile, teeth, healthy mouth are important, but I have no obsession for them.

From the pictures I saw of you, you do have a great smile, maybe not Farrah Fawcette's smile, but it Debbie's smile!

Yes! We southerners do often have missing teeth. LOL! I think it's the fear of the dentist and that drill mostly. I myself have a missing tooth, really! I have a small mouth with small teeth. It is so far in the back of my mouth that you cannot see it unless I tilt my head back and physically open my mouth VERY wide, and direct you where to look. I go to a dentist every 6 months, they no longer ask do I want a replacement. At first they thought my teeth would shift and cause other gaps. They haven't budged, in 10yrs. I've never had to have braces but have had several root canals and crowns, starting very young, hince the missing tooth, enough already...ughh! I was blessed with a pretty decent smile and normal "looking" teeth. I only really notice peoples teeth when they have been whitened mostly I look at thier smile or lack of one. I agree, you have a great smile! Good post!

I agree that you have a great smile. I like nice teeth(on me and others), but I have been fortunate. I had a gap in the front up until 7th grade, and then they closed nicely. Most people assume that I've had braces(my teeth are that straight). Here are my teeth imperfections. I pulled a tooth too early, it is in facing the wrong way, not crooked, completely turned sideways, and the tooth next to my big front left has a hole and a chip on the bottom, but you pretty much have to be staring at it or right up on me to notice, so Debbie you'd probably notice(as per obsession, lol). Dentists over the years have constantly asked about fixing the hole and chip and I more or less tell them to kiss my a**, because it is part of what makes me different :)

I do look at teeth. I like a white smile. Mine are not real white, but not bad. We use to have a man that worked on our heat and air system and his teeth were rotten. He was sick a lot to. Hello, it is your sick teeth making you sick. We have a new guy to work on it now. The other guy went bonkers on us. Probably from those rotten teeth!!

I've never had braces, my teeth have always been straight and I didn't get my first cavity til I was 17. I should've had my wisdom teeth pulled years ago but I'm scared so I have a tiny gap between 2 teeth on the bottom:( My middle and oldest sons have perfect teeth but my youngest sons were a mess and he had a horrible underbite. He had a palate expander put in first and then braces which he's had in for almost 2 years now.
I'm shocked by how many celebs have crooked teeth, I was watching someone recently whose bottom teeth were all over the place...I think it was Drew Barrymore. You'd think with all their money they would fix them!

Not wearing the retainer was a mistake for me -- the lower teeth crowded together again in front. I'm glad the kids got permanent retainers when their orthodontia was complete, because they wouldn't have put them in and taken them out everyday. And yes, I go to the dentist regularly and use an ultrasonic toothbrush. The dentist can't tell I only floss when there's something stuck.

That's funny Debbie! I was obsessed with my teeth when I started doing the pageant thing in high school. I would always smile a certain way. I had a bad crossbite and the eye teeth protruded. Then I got braces in college because I had won a prelim for the Miss NC pageant. Well, I got them on the backs of my teeth so they would not show. It was a pretty new procedure then, so much so that the local paper did an article on the dentist. Anyway, it was difficult to sing, enunciate and all that. They work very slowly that way, so I had them put on the front after about a year. But it was all worth it! I didn't win Miss NC,( thank goodness) but it made me much more comfortable smiling. I'm obsessed with the children's teeth now!

Ooohh Teeth are VERY important in my book! Funny story- I was helping out in my daughters class 2 weeks ago and I noticed a sign on the wall that said "how to brush your teeth" Below it where all of the childrens papers that explained the process. I started reading all of the 8 and 9 year olds versions of what to do. They all said the obvious stuff like- wet the toothbrush- use toothpaste- rinse your mouth out. My daughters was the only one that said "first you get your timer to make sure you brush long enough- after you brush then you floss and then you mouthwash" It was more detailed than that but you get the idea. I kind of chuckled to myself and thought- either I'm a freak or no one else cares how their kids teeth turn out....

Hi Debbie,
From what I can see in your pics you have a very pretty smile! I think it's sad when celebs. get their teeth fixed and they look the same as everyone else. Everyone's smile is unique and perfect for them.
But I did have braces - I started highschool with (horrors -) headgear. Of all the rotten ways to start out four years! It was embarassing, but I was diligent and never waivered in my commitment to get rid of my overbite. The head gear and braces came off in 18 months, my teeth have been staight ever since. Never wore a retainer, either! My sister never wore her headgear, finally the orthodontist got tired of the whole thing and took off her braces and sent her home. She regrets it to this day!
So now my 13 year old is in full braces and almost done (in Sept.). She begged me to help her fix her teeth, and I'm glad we were able to do it for her, although the expense came at a rough time for us it was soooo worth it! She smiles really big, braces and all.
Thanks for visiting, come back soon! You might want to join in on Wednesday Gratitude sometime.
I'd love to have you at the party!
XO

Hi Debbie

I just watched your Home Good commercial and I think you have a wonderful smile! That store? WOW! It's a good thing I don't live near a Home Goods or I'd be broke ..lol!

My daughter had a little gap in her front teeth and got invisalign braces which corrected it but she has to wear the retainer now forever or it will come back.

I learned two things to do every day that can save a good appearance ..use sun block and floss your teeth! :-)

Debbie, if you are truly tooth obsessed you HAVE to read this old book called Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Dr. Weston Price. He is a dentist who traveled the world in the 1920's-30's looking for societies where the people had perfect teeth (in spite of their lack of dentists or any oral hygiene skills). He found 14 such societies and took lots of pictures to document his research. It's a fascinating book and you can read it all online at http://www.journeytoforever.org/farm_library/price/pricetoc.html

Happy smiling!

HAHA! That first picture you posted totally made my day! Too cute!! And I completely understand about your teeth obsession. As a person who wore braces for 4 years, I always hate to see people (especially celebrities! they can afford to get them fixed!) with bad or crooked teeth. My husband said he once did not date someone because of their teeth. I have to say, I don't blame him one bit. And I guess he liked my teeth. :0)

Miss Janice is totally obsessed with teeth also! I've spent a fortune over the years. I had a strange deal with the braces thing when I was younger...I got the braces, then had my teeth SURGICALLY MOVED...yes ma'am, then wore the braces some more! Then, like you, I didn't wear the retainer like I should have, so they started moving AGAIN:( Couldn't have that, so I did the same thing you did.

Teeth obsession is a positive emotion according to some famous dentists in Collierville. It is a driving force gained through several environmental adaptation and natural-learned incidents. It is nothing different form liking something material or immaterial. It is likely a better gateway to have a deeper affection to teeth, causing to love and protect it more than the usual.

Your honesty is sweet! I have a small mouth, I don't have a natural smile like you, I had braces at 40 yrs. old and it was difficult. I promised myself I would get my teeth straight some day and finally did, after both my kids had theirs done. I too have the front tooth that wants to protrude more than the other. I did it all the way I was supposed to, even had a wire glued on the back of the bottom teeth for two extra years. Finally I had that removed and eventually slumped off from wearing the retainer. My teeth are not as perfect as they were, but I'm happy with them. Now the whitening issues...mine aren't terrible, but that is an area I could improve. I too believe in good oral hygiene and my Oral B toothbrush is my savior! You have a great smile...don't waste time worrying about it!

I definitely understand your teeth obsession Debbie. A smile does speak volumes and its the first thing that people notices about a certain person.

That's the same reason why my brother opted for cosmetic dentistry. Chicago and most parts of the country have practitioners that can solve problems like crooked or chipped teeth. He found a good cosmetic dentist, Chicago based, that was able to help him resolve his teeth problems. Now, he is enjoying what he calls as his 'Hollywood' smile.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
