Calling all you Southern Belles

Straight up here, "I'm a damn Yankee"! At least that is what I have been told.

What is a Yankee?

You think barbecue is a verb meaning "to cook outside."

 

You would rather vacation at Martha's Vineyard than Six Flags.

 

 Instead of referring to two or more people as "y'all," you call them "you
guys," even if both of them are women.

 

You would never wear pink or an appliqued sweatshirt

 You don't know what appliqued is.

 

So yeah, you get this gist of what a damn Yankee is, you may know one or be one yourself.

 

Moved from Buffalo, to Florida in 1997, then in 2006 we transplanted to South Carolina.  At that time we were called Half backs.  I kinda liked that name.

 

  Since the very first day here,  I fell in love with the South. Took some getting use to. Being a Northerner for most of my life, it is very different culturally. I had never known a true Southerner ..

until I met my very sweet Southern Belle friend Laurian.  What is a Southern belle you ask?

Other current terms in popular culture related to "Southern belles" include "Ya Ya Sisters," "GRITS (Girls Raised In The South)," and "Sweet Potato Queens."

Laurian is a piano teacher for a local academy in our area.  Her boy and Jack started kindergarten together.  From that day forward I had my first Southern friend. Laurian grew up in Edisto Beach.

 She can cook, sing, play piano, and has a tongue like a razor. Let me just say, she IS the funniest girl I have ever met in my life.  She can bust out into an impression of a little chinese lady, to a Mexican soprano singer, oh and she does a serious Impression of a Domino's delivery girl,  She is like a stand up act all in one.

 So let me take you along our girls night out...in the kitchen with  Laurian. She whipped up some of her Mama's Shrimp creole.  It was mouth watering delicious. 

It was a recipe she never had tried of her Mama's. Her Mom passed away two years ago from breast cancer. Laurian coming from a family of 5 girls, her Mama passed down cookbooks to each one of them.

 Meet Cathy, she is originally from Indiana, but grew up most of her life In Arkansa. There she holds proudly a jar of moon shine cherries.  Let me just say, they are wicked..but good! Cathy is a midwestern girl in southern training, as Laurian would say.

Michele is from Florida, she is a southern Yankee.

This is pretty much the night, laughter, food, drinks and fun.

Just look at this shrimp creole.  Laurian is suppose to be sharing the recipe with us, so I can do the same for you if you would like it.

That's my friend Barb down at the end.  Barb did not like any of the pics I took of her, so I thought this one was pretty good. Barb is from Wisconsin, yes she does like cheese.

So there you have a girls night out in our little town.  Such great fun.  I not only have these wonderful virtual friendships, I am blessed to have day to day friends that keep me smiling too. How can't I be happy?
