Calling all you Southern Belles
You think barbecue is a verb meaning "to cook outside."
You would rather vacation at Martha's Vineyard than Six Flags.
Instead of referring to two or more people as "y'all," you call them "you
guys," even if both of them are women.
You would never wear pink or an appliqued sweatshirt
You don't know what appliqued is.
So yeah, you get this gist of what a damn Yankee is, you may know one or be one yourself.
Moved from Buffalo, to Florida in 1997, then in 2006 we transplanted to South Carolina. At that time we were called Half backs. I kinda liked that name.
Since the very first day here, I fell in love with the South. Took some getting use to. Being a Northerner for most of my life, it is very different culturally. I had never known a true Southerner ..
until I met my very sweet Southern Belle friend Laurian. What is a Southern belle you ask?
Other current terms in popular culture related to "Southern belles" include "Ya Ya Sisters," "GRITS (Girls Raised In The South)," and "Sweet Potato Queens."
Laurian is a piano teacher for a local academy in our area. Her boy and Jack started kindergarten together. From that day forward I had my first Southern friend. Laurian grew up in Edisto Beach.
She can cook, sing, play piano, and has a tongue like a razor. Let me just say, she IS the funniest girl I have ever met in my life. She can bust out into an impression of a little chinese lady, to a Mexican soprano singer, oh and she does a serious Impression of a Domino's delivery girl, She is like a stand up act all in one.
So let me take you along our girls night out...in the kitchen with Laurian. She whipped up some of her Mama's Shrimp creole. It was mouth watering delicious.
It was a recipe she never had tried of her Mama's. Her Mom passed away two years ago from breast cancer. Laurian coming from a family of 5 girls, her Mama passed down cookbooks to each one of them.
Meet Cathy, she is originally from Indiana, but grew up most of her life In Arkansa. There she holds proudly a jar of moon shine cherries. Let me just say, they are wicked..but good! Cathy is a midwestern girl in southern training, as Laurian would say.
Last chance to get in on the giveaway, ends Monday.

Such lovely ladies and sounds like you had such a fun day and evening. Friends are just the best. Hugs, Marty
You are too funny:) What a great diverse group of friends you have! They all seem like wonderful ladies, and I loved vacationing at Edisto one year! Looking forward to the partay!
"Well Bless Your Heart"
- having been raised by a woman from NJ and following a military dad just about everywhere before landing in Virginia, I get you. I know, those girls in the Carolinas don't think Virginia counts as Southern, have they forgotten where Richmond is? Or where Lee was from? Goodness knows, the Virginians haven't! My friend tells me, "just because the cat has kittens in the oven doesn't mean we call 'em biscuits"
meaning, not only am I a Yankee but all my Virginian born children are too! *giggles*
Sounds like you had a great time. I'd love a recipe for those moonshine cherries! Do I really need moonshine to make them though? That's hard to come by in these parts.
Sound like fun! And, my hair looked like that (in another life)!
You are so lucky to have friends to hang with. Looks like a fun night. I don't care for shrimp creole though. I like fried shrimp or shrimp scampi. Other than that I don't care for shrimp much.
Oh, you have my dying laughing first thing in the morning... "Southern Yankee" nearly killed me.
I use the term "Yankee" on an almost daily basis, LOL. Doesn't everyone?! :D
PS. We are getting a handle on our hair down here finally - we all just got straighteners THIS Christmas. So when the rest of the world goes back to big hair, we will STILL be 10 years behind! hehe
You are too funny & I am a bit jealous of your fun night out with the girls...
From the far north here, I get to the south 4 - 5 times a year to work. I always tell my friends here that girls from the south have big hair, big jewelry, big wallets, & really big hearts... : )
From one southern Belle to anoth.....Oohh!..From one southern Belle to "ALL" "WELCOME", you all are just wondeful!..I want to say,"Once you drank the water in the southern states, or below the mason dixon line, or east of the Mississippi River,YOU never go back"!
Looks like a great time,good food,good friends,good get together!..HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND!
~(OO)~

well I hear ya honey. I tried and tried to get my Yankee husband to move South. But here I am still in ND with 4 feet of snow and a warm up of 11 degrees above zero on the way!
so....here in Yankee land I do everything I can ASAP- as Southern as possible!
not that I don't love the North.....but I do so love the South. YOu look like you have wonderful friends, what a blessing!
What fun. My lady friends are so near and dear to me!!!
How funny! I'm such a yankee it's ridiculous. Yes I say you guy, even use to could(don't ask) I'm a true northerner here in the Buffalo area most of my life. Besides moving to FL in 1998 until 2004. I missed home don't ask me why. Hey my latest post has a shout out to you take a look at it:)
Yum! That looks delicious! How lucky for you to have such a great group of women to get together with and one of them being a southern gal who can cook too!
What a fun time! Girlfriends do make all the difference in the world in my opinion! I am a Southern Belle born and bred. I did my Yankee time in Michigan where everyone always commented on my accent. I wouldn't trade my twang for anything in the world! I would love that recipe!
I think I am a Southern Yankee!
Too funny, Debbie! I'm a Southern Yankee, too. I could've sworn that was my high school picture with the hair to the sky (I may have to borrow that saying, too)! Looks like you guys had a fabulous time ... and look at that food. Deelish! Stay warm, Becca
super cute post Debbie, looks like you ahve so great friends,CONGRAULATION on your one year of blogging...
Looks like you had a great time! I have several from up here in the North, transplanted to your area. They just love living there.
Have a great week-end! :)
~Vicki~
Looks like you had a great time and great food.
Enjoy your weekend.
When I lived in the south (SC and NC for a total of 12 years) I was told that a Yankee comes to visit, but a d___ yankee stays!
However, if you live anywhere OUTSIDE of North America, a Yankee is ANY American!!! I'm pretty sure our southern friends don't want to be called a yankee!!! Hehehehehe
I could go on with your list of what a Southern Belle needs to do to BE one - - - which does include making biscuits from scratch WITHOUT a recipe.
What a southern name she has too, Laurian. I'm a yankee by birth, but southern in my heart. Have lived in the south since 7th grade, so my formative years (teenage) are southern ya'll. Big hair and bigger boobs if they want to buy them. Ya'll come back now ya hear!
I love it!! I'm a born and raised Southern Bell. Born in Arkansas now living in Tennessee. Married a Damn Yankee, from Philadelphia. I think your a Southern Bell in training too! Your first lesson, you can say whatever you like to some one and still be loved as long as you follow it with "bless her heart". LOL
Great post! Reminds me of my group of friends here in Texas, we are all pretty much transplants!
I was born and raised in IN... so while it's midwestern, I guess you could call us "hicks". Then I moved to Atlanta where EVERYONE called me "That Yankee girl" (who ME? I was so confused, I thought yankees were from like NY and stuff ;P).
Then I moved to Chicago, and since I was from Indiana... I became "That southern girl". It's all so relative (and confusing!).
And now with being in Texas, they mostly just call me a northerner!
Well, I'm a native Texan and have been in training to be a Southern Belle most of my life...some of it took and some, not so much. :-) There are so many funny jokes about this subject, however, I won't share them here.
I think it's such fun to have girl's night! What would we ever do without our friends? I'd love the recipe ~ love seafood in any form! IF you don't have to have real moonshine, the cherries too. I know several people would like that.
Hey, you're the winner of my giveaway ~ congrats! Check your email please. Have a great weekend!
xo

Good friends and Good food - ya'll know how to throw a party....no matter where your from!
Unfortunately, once a damned Yankee always a damned Yankee. I mean, I have lived over half my life in the South.....but the Yankee lingers on. One of my son's was born in OK and the other one, here in SC. But even they are not considered true Southerners since their parents are not true Southerners.....ah well!
ps. looks like a great gang!
Your friends look like fun!! :) You're such a fun person yourself, it is no wonder that you girls got together! :) Cheers to your upcoming 1 yr blog anniversary! :) :) :)
I'm a Carolina GRIT, and I would like to disagree about the appliqued sweatshirt thing. My husband has some relatives from Philly and Jersey, and they have quite the collection o' tacky appliqued sweatshirts.
Glad to see you like it here!
What a group!! You can tell alot from these photos. Fun!! and has it been a year already? Wow, it doesnt seem so long ago.
I love this posting! I love getting together with my girlfriends. We usualy meet at a restaurant. Love the wild hair-do's..the dog is funny!
I'm a damn Yankee and proud of it!
Love from Michigan, Liz
Looks like y'all had a great time:)
I am a true Southern Belle! My favorite saying is American by birth, but Southern by the Grace of God! :) I pray every day that big hair comes back soon:) I would love to have cookbooks to pass along to my girls, but it would take forever to make because my Mama and Grandmama just taught us by making us do it and then just adjusting by taste!
I consider myself Southern by the Grace of God. I am a born and bred Jersey girl who has never felt more at home than here in NC Here's a ha ha for you~ we went back up to Jersey for a wedding about a year and a half after living down here and I got a bit of a drink on and girl- there was a Civil War goin' on with my accent! Funniest thing you ever heard!
I loved this post ,one of my best Friends was born in South Carolina ,she was even Miss south Carolina long ago ,this is soooo unusual to me as an Aussie we are not so much into beauty contests here! oh and by the way we don't say Y'all ,sometimes we do say You Guys (too much American TV) we do say Youse (plural for you of course),while it is considered very bad breeding we all drop it every now and then !
~Sharon~
I had a good laugh about about your Southern Yankee! I've lived in Virginia for about 9 years now, and I've found that the only thing that is worse than being a Yankee, is being a Californian! Now, in the south, anyone one who is not from the south is a Yankee, that much I have learned. When people here I am from Cali they look at me like I am crazy! When I was a teen we made a visit to Texas, the furthest edge of the south. When a cashier saw my dad's drivers license said California, she took two steps back and looked us all over and then said "well, you look normal" as though we should look like aliens. Needless to say we had a good laugh over that. But really, I love the south, people make eye contact, they wave when you drive past, even if they don't know you. In the south it is okay to smother and cover your veggies in a sauce so you don't have to taste them! That is awesome! I really love living in the south, and it does occasionally crack me up to hear people talk like the Civil war was just yesterday.
Oohh, Edisto Beach! My favorite! You should get Laurian to take y'all there for a girls' weekend. You'll love it. Believe it or not, there are also degrees of Southern-ness in the language. I live in Charlotte now but I'm originally from Louisiana. Whenever I go back there it takes all of two seconds to start draggin' out those aaaayyyyys.
I am a true Yankee and I am proud of it. I still love all you Southern gals though, and definitely want that Shrimp Creole recipe! It looks like all of 'you guys' had fun! Up here in the Windy City we have a Ladies Night and we eat a lot of GREAT pizza...you guys would love it!! ;-D
XO,
Jane
I've lived almost all of my life in the south. I was born and raised in FL (that's pretty far south) but I don't have a southern accent. Now, the people born in N. FL have more of a southern accent I guess being so close to GA and AL!
And you do know the real meaning of "Well, bless you heart" right? lol! ;)
Ive loved your blog from the first sentence & am honored to be on it now with our TC Ladies!!! We ARE the party!!Thank you for enjoying it as much as I enjoyed cooking it for ya'll!! Love ya honey....since kindergarten!! Im just sayin!! Remember ..first you POINT...ponder for a minute...THEN say "hmmm...well...bless her heart!!" LOL RECIPE TO FOLLOW!!! ;)
Yay the star of the post commented. This was so much fun!
You are too funny! Just one thought from an old southern girl from the deep south.
This old gal never heard of "sweet tea" until I started hearing it on TV to describe iced tea in the south.
We never called it "sweet iced tea" because all iced tea WAS sweet. Guess that was before the days of artificial sweeteners and TV. LOL.
Love your mix of "real" friends.
I love YA girl. Ginger
haha love this post and looks like an awesome mix of friends together for an awesome night! I loved it growing up military and then marrying military...and the many dear friendships of those from all parts of the country and world :o)
Here's to many, many more fun times for all of you!
Blessings & Aloha!
oh! oops! I also meant to ask if Laurian's amazing looking recipe was already shared :o)
Blessings & Aloha!
